Weather Behavior

Do your dogs behave different when there is bad weather approaching? Thankfully, our dogs aren't afraid of bad weather...I've heard horror stories about pups who were terrified of storms. I remember reading something about animals sensing bad weather and behaving differently. I never noticed it myself, but I remember for Katrina, one of our local radio personalities was freaking out because there were no birds around. Anyway, getting around to my point...I woke up this morning to find Piment, my standard poodle, in bed with me! May not sound weird, but he NEVER sleeps in my bed...even when I want him to. He's always under the bed, or at the foot of the bed, always in my room, but never in the bed. And this morning, there he was. I'm sure you southern states folks know that we have a tropical storm in the Gulf right now...I just wonder if my dog's behavior is somewhat related to the storm?? It's not supposed to bother us much...we may have some squally weather, but not a direct hit. Weird, huh?

We have a problem with Vinnie during storms. If it is thundering/lightning we have problems. He will whine/bark/whimper all the time walking around from room to room window/door etc. It absolutely drives us bonkers! He always wants to go out then too where he gives us all a "show". He will run as fast as possible to the end of his lead, even flipping him on his butt at the end barking excessively. It is insane!

I have found if I put a leash on him and hold it the entire time,he calms down(in the house). I've actually slept in bed holding Vinnie on a leash. I know it sounds nuts----but it's true! It has kept him from waking up the whole house!

No problems here. My guys don't even notice heavy thunder. They just either sleep or play right thru it. I know someone who's dog just totally freaks out. It's kinda funny to see this large sheppard be afraid and my guys not even notice.

We haven't had any hurricanes here in VA/NC this year yet, so I can't say, but it'll be interesting to see. Gucci can sense a storm coming, I think. She won't stay outside and want to play when the clouds/rain are approaching, she does her business and back to the door.

I do believe they all can sense danger, I remember my pets during childhood getting skittish when tornados would develop.

I've finally gotten her 'better' with the thunder and loud noises. It has taken a year of acting calm and reassuring her, and she is finally starting to relax a bit when the sky is roaring. its not 100% cured, but better...and more so with thunder than fireworks, those still scare her.

I don't think Vinnie is afraid----he is a "herding" dog,so his job is to herd(circle around) etc. I read on a message board it is not uncommon for shelties. They run and bark and try to herd off the storm to protect they're own.

Quincy just looks at Vinnie likes he's an idiot! Quincy could care less if there is a storm or not. It is kinda funny.

That's interesting, Julie. Where I live, a thunderstorm might consist of one or two claps of thunder and that's it and I'm curious as to how Rumor will handle it. McKenna immediately runs outside to bark at the thunder because it is invading her territory. She barks at airplanes for the same reason. She's in charge of protecting our air space and she takes her job very seriously.
I'm wondering how Rumor will react though. She paid no attention of fireworks on the fouth of July.
I have no idea how she'll react to the rain either. She sure better go out in it to do her business!! She spent a month at her breeder's in Oregon so hopefully they had rain during that time so she got used to it.

Benji and Lizzie both bark sometimes at the thunder if it is loud. Benji doesn't venture out if he even smells rain! He wouldn't even go on a covered patio. Lizzie runs out does her business quickly, even in pouring rain and gets back in. If there is lightening though, she will stay in.

Scooter freaked out last week when we had a bad storm but that's the first time. DH had to get up during the night and hold him to calm him down a bit. He was very afraid of fireworks too so maybe it's the loud noise that he hates. When my boys are downstairs playing video games or watching a loud movie in the theater room he's restless. You can feel the vibrations through the floor and it must bother him. Strange little guy!
