Home alone for the first time!

I finally left Yoyo home by himself for the first time! He has been by himself at my mom's house lots of time and he's fine over there, but we haven't left him home in our brand new remodelled kitchen ever! (Maybe that's just the excuse we've been telling ourselves.) Well, just short times, REALLY short times that I guess I really can't consider alone.

I took him for a long walk this morning to poop him out, then brought him inside. I put his dog crate at one sliding glass doorway to block it off and a baby gate at the other. I left his food and water bowls, the toys that he plays the most with, and one of my sleeping shirts in there as well. I sat outside the blocked room for about 15 minutes, talking on the phone, but I guess he really could still see me through the sliding glass door but I wasn't talking to him, and he was yelping and barking but still I ignored him. Then I left the house. <dum dum dummmmm> The yelping and barking increased and I could hear him out on the street but I kept going, kept walking, which I think has been the biggest hurdle for me, just keep going. Came back about 45 minutes later, ignored him for 5 minutes (I know it should be longer but oh well), he was jumping and leaping all over me the whole time, then I finally gave him a yummy new pepperoni treat and loved him to death! He was so happy and now he's contentedly sitting on the floor, playing with his chew bone.

What a success for me. And after reading all that you here have been able to achieve with your dogs I think really motivated me to do the same. Thanks to you all!

P.S. If you can think of any suggestions to change or add, I would be very, very welcome and open to them.

It sounds to me that you did everything right.

Cazzie just sits and waits for us to come home, no matter how he barks when he sees me getting ready to leave.

Sounds like you did a great job!! You should be proud, I too found it very hard to leave my first girl alone in the beginning. She really did well, but I know you are not alone in having a pup that whines and crys when you leave. My solution was probably not the best for everyone, but I got her a sister, and then a brother

That is SO tempting, and something we have considered in the past, but realized that it would be hard for someone else to care for 2 dogs vs. 1 if we ever had to go away. But SO tempting, I have to say.

It sounds like it was harder on you than it was on him (but he was trying to convince you otherwise). Great job! I think you did it well.

You did great! It'll get easier on you and on him. One thing I've always done is make sure that I don't make a big deal out of leaving, other than giving them a small treat and telling them I'll be back soon. I also make my arrival home low key, at least until I stow my stuff and change my clothes, then they get all the hugs, kisses and praise I can give them.

You did great. I am surprised it was the first time since he's close to 1.5 years but hey, you did a great job and I can tell it was pretty tough for you. We left our JoJo alone for the first time a few months ago (at 4 mos) and it was just as tough but now we can leave him for several hours if we need to with no problems. Ideally I think a brother or sister would be best but these great dogs have a wonderful ability to entertain themselves, and at least in our case they're not destructive at all. Gotta love em'!

I think it was more ME who wasn't ready than him. What is it like caring for one and then caring for two? I think the main reason we haven't gotten another one is:

1) we're planning on starting a family soon, like within the year if nature agrees, and
2) we sometimes have to leave Yoyo with my mom or another relative/friend when we go away and I think caring for two would be too difficult.
