Unhappy Arrgh..my laptop

is DEAD. This is the second one in last 6-7 months. If the hard drive is damaged, I may have lost pictures of Benji and Lizzie With all the stuff going on recently with our move, I haven't been able to back up regularly.

I am unable to log in regularly to the forum. I am sorry that I may have missed some of your joys and worries over your furballs and families recently. Hope to join when I can. Take care.

Best,
Poornima

I'm soo sorry, Poornima! I know how frustrating that can be, I lost 1500 songs on my iTunes once, and then all my pictures!

You may be able to take it to a specialist who can pull the pictures off the hard drive for you.

Ryan, the first laptop was Compaq and this one is Gateway! Both were brand new. These days there is no gaurantee of quality. We have some stereos, applicances made in Japan, US and Germany from the 80s and 90s and they are still fine.

Kara, I know how bad you must feel losing pictures and songs. I lost some dear stuff when the first laptop was dead.

Best, Poornima

My biggest fear is my computer crashing.....many years of photos...I bought an external hard drive to back them up, but can't figure out how to use it. So sorry you are having problems, Poornima.....

Judy, I bought an external drive and it took me a year to finally look into how to use it. I found out that most of them are plug & play - super dooper easy! I bet yours is the same. Just plug it into the main computer and start saving things to it. (It will appear as a new folder/drive.)

Poornima, that really bites! I'm so sorry.

Poornima - you are going to have to get my online backup service with your new computer. It's www.mozy.com You can get free storage for up to 2GB and then it's only $4.95 monthly and it backs up daily any changes after your initial backup. It's so simple and I never, ever have to worry about remembering to do it myself. I know there are other good ones out there, but this is super consumer friendly. Especially for the non-techies out there.

Hey, Poormina... Joann here!

<putting on the technician hat>

what error message are you getting? Is it upon bootup, or do you just get the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death)? Are you running XP or Vista? Have you checked and double checked all connections?

I sooo feel for you; as an avid PC gamer (yes, there is life outside of Castro!), I learned the HARD way! I use an external HD for ALL pictures, movies, music and the like.

Since I work with different computers (mac & pc), I just connect the external HD to whatever one I'm working on. IN the long run, also saves room on the Internal HD

May the Force be with you....

Poornima I am so sorry you are having terrible luck with your laptops. That seems so weird they are dying on you after such a short time. My personal laptop I have had since beginning of college (so, 6 years old) still works but the battery is dead so it has to be permanently plugged in. My work laptops dont die, we are using HP notebooks on a 2 year lease.

One of the partners at my firm's lap top died becuase she was putting it away in her laptop bag before it was completely shut down, so it was over heating in the carrier.

I hope you figure out what happened and there is a warranty for your system still.
