Dog Food (again)!

OK I'm a noob here I know, and perhaps this has been covered ad nauseum but were having a bit of a food issue with our Hav pup. JoJo is 6 mos old and had been fed Royal Canin puppy formula from the time we got him at 8 weeks until a few weeks ago. JoJo never really liked the RC but he ate it mostly because we added a lot of chicken, beef and occasionally some cheese. Besides that I realized that we should be feeding him a higher quality food and began researching the top foods. The food I thought was the best was Innova EVO and we got JoJo some of this food. Unfortunately he hates it will only eat it in the smallest amounts and even then very reluctantly. OK, not completely unexpected, so we got a couple of samples of Canidae. We'll JoJo absolutely loves this stuff and will scarf it up readily with no additions of any kind! Great, I thought, until I did some research. Seems there are a number of cases where dogs have gotten sick from the "new" reformulated Canidae food. My question is , does anyone here feed there Hav Canidae? I really want to give him what he likes but I'm really concerned about the actual quality of this food. So far after about 4 meals with the Canidae, JoJo seems to have no adverse effects or reactions, what an I to think???

I am probably not the one to be asking about Canidae~~
I started feeding it last fall. My dogs LOVED it! But just a couple months after starting it, one of my dogs got a bladder infection. He ended up getting bladder crystals which turned into bladder stones. He had to have very expensive emergency surgery to have the stones removed. Just 3 weeks later, another of my dogs had the same thing and had to have her bladder stones removed also! And yet another of my dogs had crystals but we caught it early enough and she never got stones.
My dogs were my vets 3rd and 4th case of bladder stones in only 3 months from dogs that were eating Canidae. Too much of a coincendence if you ask me!!

Our Bella is a year now and she's been on Canidae her whole life. Our breeder has only used Canidae for years and she's had no problems. I'm always looking for something better but so far, I've had no reason to complain.

Which Evo did you try? There are two flavours, The plain one which I think is chicken/Turkey based and then there's the Red Meat Version. You could try Innova - from the same manufacturer but not grain free.

Try this site for dog food reviews. It might help you in choosing one that is nutritious.

Based on the little bit of research I've done, Candidae is having problems - they've apparently switched manufacturing facilities and did a slight formula change. The feline version is also experiencing something. My cat loved the first bag and went without eating for an entire month when I opened the second. I finally had to resort to canned food only. I would find something else for sure.

You can do great research on www.dogfoodanalysis.com. Many of the members here feed Fromms, Wellness, EVO, Solid Gold. These are all great foods if you don't have the stomach for raw feeding. Another trick that people have found that may work is to add a little bit of hot water to the kibble, add a touch of good quality canned food or meat and serve the little buggers on a small plate rather than a bowl. Don't ask me why, but some prefer to not get their noses into small places. Silly furballs!

Welcome "noob" and JoJo!

Like Lisa said, there have been changes recently to the Canidae. I work in a health food store for cats and dogs and some customers have stopped buying it, either because their dog no longer likes the Canidae, or the owners are leery of the changes. It isn't a bad food, but there are many that are better, IMHO.

Thanks everyone, for all your info. We were trying the chicken/turkey EVO and luckily the store we bought it from guaranteed it and told us right then that if he didn't like it we could bring it back so I'm thinking about trying the regular Innova. I'm not so concerned about some grains as long as its not corn. Thanks again for all the links as well

My puppy has tried at least 10 different foods.
Right now he's eating a mix of Eukanuba (which is what the breeder fed) and Orijen puppy (grain free) he also likes Natures Variety Prairie Salmon meal and brown rice.
Luckily my pet food store has samples of every food that they carry and they love to send me home with them..
I had high hopes for Innova but it didn't go over very well with him.

Tori didn't like either of the flavors of Evo nor would she eat the Innova. She had been eating Nutro for small breeds but, there were reports of dogs getting sick on it so I took her off it. After trying the Evo/Innova I tried Taste of the Wild and she loves it! It is 6 star rated on dogfoodanalysis.com, is grain free, and she's happy to eat it w/out anything mixed in. However, she does get egg yolk mixed in it in the AM.
