To couch or not to couch.

Moxie ( 8 months ) just figured how to get up on the furniture and this might sound silly, but having never had small dogs, I was wondering if anyone did not allow furniture privleges with the little ones?
Although he looks mighty cute up there, he is still at the stage where he cannot be trusted and this just gives him access to a whole new world of trouble to get into.
Also, he seems to have outgrown interest in his toys, any comments on that?

I would not let him jump down anything super high until he is older. I know for agility they cant jump until a certain height, not sure what that is though.

The toy thing seems normal. Sometimes mine like theirs, sometimes dirty laundry is just way cooler. Does he play with you with the toys?

Todd gets to be on the couch supervised. He's still to small to get up by himself and so he stands on his hind legs and begs to be picked up..lol
I rotate toys so that he doesn't get bored with them. They stay in a basket and every few days I trade them out for different one. He loves it and acts like they are new again.

Dash was jumping on the couch when I brought him home but he just followed Belle and Dora up there. I do try to always put them down but he does jump all over things. I do really try to not let any of the dogs take flights of stairs. I think it is just a personal thing. Some people don't want dogs on furniture and I can respect that It makes your couch a lot smaller when you have 3!

As to toys, Dash definitely has his favorites. I just had him visiting my little sisters and they loved his retrieve and he has a favorite toy and when they stopped playing with that one, he decided game over!

Kodi and Shelby have always jumped up on and off the couch. It's not their most favorite place to stsy, but it is in front of the big window, so they use it for that. They never had an accident on it either. Shelby likes the couch when it is cooler, but the floor when it is hot out. The floor is cooler. When I had bigger dogs, they loved to be on the couch. That is where they slept at night.

i like them on the couch with me even though i have never let a dog on the furniture before. i think it's a small dog thing.
mugsy prefers to sleep on the floor next to the couch and kaylie likes the end of the couch.

I would get some new toys, and rotate them.
Also, interact with Moxie and the toys in a different way. (Play retrieve, or teach the name of the toy, suggesting that he go look for a certain toy and bring it to you and reward thereafter.

My guys had full access to the couch as soon as they were able to jump on. Doesn't bother me a bit. I did however always make sure I held them when they jumped back down as I don't think there bones are quite sturdy enough to withstand the weight from a high jump. They just love chasing each other and flying onto the couch and flying off again. Quite frequently they just fall asleep on the top edges of the couch much like a cat.

Chances are if your parents never had kids...you won't either...

Thank you for the generous feedback. I didn't know that a jump like that could hurt them. He sure is entertained by the drop the toy and jump down to get it game today.

See my avatar. Various pieces of furniture often makes us think that Salvador Dali must have known a family like ours. We have dogs draped over everything.

Our rule of thumb for jumping off stuff is that they aren't allowed to jump off anything that they can't jump onto on their own. Visiting children and some adults are required to sit on the floor to hold a puppy when they come to visit.
