Journey to and from Bed

With the new house comes back the old giant bed- woo hoo king pillow top again! However, we need a way for 3 dogs to go up and down easily and something they will use. It is giant and while Belle can scale the sides, I prefer for her to not and I am scared if Dash sees her do this he will do it too. He tends to follow her lead rather than wait for me (had plenty of reminders at the hotel). I did slide over an ottoman from the chair in one of the hotels and they did use this each time.

If anyone has photos that would be great. I was thinking of getting a bench or a trunk to put at the foot of the bed but I would love to known what everyone else has found that actually works. I don't think any of the pre-made steps will be tall enough. Last time, DH made steps they were huge and horrible (shhhh he thinks he is quite he handyman and I am more than willing to let him put down the books and try!). I love Susan's set up and would steal it but my bedroom is not going to be big enough but I will definitely try when the bed gets here.

Amanda, PM Susan, she's got a beautiful set up in her bedroom. The stairs are very wide and I think there are three of them. It's just beautiful and really fits the room.

Oh and yes, getting that king bed back is such a treat. Mine's even feeling so good again that I'm sleeping on it rather than my reclining chair. Which is pretty bad looking but oh so comfortable. LOL

Amanda, you can do the same thing Steve did but do it with smaller racks. It's actually a shelving unit he bought at Home Depot or Lowe's. I know they have smaller ones that might work for you. We had to go this route because there is a good sized gap between the bed and the foot board. The way ours is set up it eliminates the gap. I'll see if I can find a link to the type of shelving unit Steve bought.
The set-up will never make it into House Beautiful but the girls love it, it's easy to take down (but we never do) and Rumor has decided she likes sleeping there!

Amanda,
You can buy steps in varying sizes and heights. There are people on ebay that will make them to order pretty cheap too. I look forward though to seeing Susan's set up, as I didn't venture into their master bedroom when we were all there a couple of months ago, like it seems some of you did. <GRIN>

I'd like to see that too. Kodi was able to jump on and off our old bed. Shelby never did. If she had to get up, she would whine to let me know. But, since we got the new king size bed, it is much higher. Kodi will jump off it, but can't get back on and I really don't want him jumping that high.

I had my cedar chest at the foot of the bed and it worked great till i moved the furniture. Then we had to buy the doggie stairs.

I will be anxious to see some real step pics too. We pulled an ottoman up to the side of the bed and it works real well. I like that the platform they land on is large. I've been a little concerned that it they had steps they would tend to jump and miss a couple of steps because so often they are in a hurry to get off.

OH geez...You'll laugh. The steps are pretty crazy, and real stairs they are not, but they work. Sedona has never been able to jump onto our bed and Steve has never found a set of doggie stairs that he feels are safe enough for his girls....they are either too flimsy, too short, too narrow or too easy for the girls to fall off of. Soooo, he took matters into his own hands one day and I came home from work to find a rather interesting set of stairs leading up to my bed. The theory being that they are easy to assemble and take down when guests are over. We have yet to take them down and they do become a conversation piece. You'll see that they are also right up against the bed so no falling into the space between the bed and the foot board. We use a carpet runner as a pathway but have thought of cutting some wood to fit each step and painting it. Remember, it was Steve's idea...

That's cool! Each platform is deep enough so they won't stumble. You almost don't even need the top step.
