questions about forum stuff

There are a couple of things I don't understand and maybe someone can help me with it.
What is the contacts and friends about? I think I got it right by checking a box with their avatars in them and said yes, but what am I saying yes to and what does that feature do or have?
New visitor messages....what is that about and who sees your reply? How is it different from a pm?
See, I do need a dunce hat for the forum <sigh>

Hi Jan, you aren't a dunce - it's kind of hard to understand. With friends, you click yes and you can see their avatars. Not sure if there are any other features attached to that. The visitor messages are public and anyone can read them. I'm really bad about checking mine since we don't get a notice that they are there - you just have to check under your notifications button at the top right of the page.

Ha, the jury is still out on that Lisa
Thanks for the help! Why use the visitor thingie instead of a pm or a post if all can see? And where do they go to see what's said? Heck, I just found MY OWN.

Well, it's a bit less intrusive (when I don't want to click "new posts") and just use the back button on my browser - but if you've got a PM, then it keeps showing up since you aren't "refreshing" the page and getting rid of the notification. Other than that, perhaps it's a good place to keep a conversation going rather than going way, way, way off topic or hijacking someone else's thread. Besides, it kind of fun - something else to do.

One of the options with friends and contacts is that you can limit who can contact you or leave messages on your page. You'd need to look through your Control Panel (User CP) on how to use it, but it is one of those features that would really only be used by a handful of people on a friendly forum like this. If it were a bigger forum with a lot of controversy, then more people would choose to use it in order to prevent a lot of personal contact from those that are pests.

Kathy, they are on your public profile. I just left you a visitor message so you can see where they are. (Amanda left you one two months ago.) You should probably see the notification appear up on the top right of your screen near the private message notification. However, if you have e-mail notification set up, you may get an e-mail notice about it too.

LOL I'd help you find it if I could remember where I found it. Kathy, I could give you a hug! I'm glad I'm not alone!! If I have turned someone down as a friend, I didn't mean to and don't take it personally....I just have no clue what to do with it.
