Riki should be twelve pounds, but he is 14. Might be because he is altered, and I have heard that sometimes neutered dogs have chests that expand. But I think some of it is overweight. So he is on a havadiet.

I just reduced his food by a little...but now he is going into the trash cans in the house. He never did that before.

Perhaps he does what women do...get so hungry he is out of control? Ideas...

He has to lose at least two pounds slowly because I want him to live a long and healthy life. I think I used to run him more often also because of agility. Since I have been working more, he doesn't get to run as much although I still exercise him.

I didn't just get havanese, I got a lifestyle!

does anyone have experience helping a havanese get trim again?

Has anyone been successful reducing food for a while to get the dog back in shape. He just got into the trash again, this is a big challenge. He never once did that before.

Linda, I have an even worse problem!! when I reduce Cash's food he starts eating his own tootsie rolls, if you know what I mean. One day DH told me Cash on his walk turned himself into a pretzel to get it on it's way out so DH couldn't get it first

I found with Cash anyway, that if I basically keep him on an all protein diet he does better. Kind of like the atkins for humans, he is much less hungry. I have just started to add a little kibble back in to the NV medallions but I think I had to reset his metabolism and hunger with all protein for a while. We use the Natures Variety raw medallions. But I cook them. But, not sure what you are feeding, but you could try an EVO kibble or Orijen, or Core.

Or the other way to go, is get him a Weight loss kibble, Royal Canin has one for small dogs, it has more protein, more fiber and they can have more for less calories and feel fuller... if Ricky isn't picky this may be a way to go.

good luck, we were in for a shock last time Cash went on a scale...24.5 lbs...he is a big Hav but still. We are now counting treats... and everything else.

Linda- I had the exact other problem, my kids lost weight when were werent doing agility as much. I think they were just pure muscle. Now I am trying to get the little guy to gain weight and the maltese has gained the most! That is how it always works

Maybe you could mix in green beans or puff wheat with his food so he feels more full. I feel bad the little guy is getting into the trash trying to find the food.

Thinking of adding a Neezer, check out this thread!

I was going to suggest the same as Missy. There are lots of low fat foods for dogs now. Or, you can try feeding smaller meals, but maybe give him a third one during the day, also smaller.

I would also suggest more exercise, not less food. It will only make him HUNGRY. Lower calorie foods like green beans will help to fill his belly without adding tons of calories and watch out for the snacks!

I think lots of walks and playing will help out and dont skimp too much on food. With our Carmen we found walks helped a lot, and limiting the treats. She doesnt get goodies all the time anymore just plain old rawhides if she is still hankering for something. Also adding in some water to the kibble so they expand seems to make them feel full also.
