Trying to decide

Aretha's breeder (and co owner) and I are discussing breeding her again. I am not a big time breeder ( 2 puli litter and 2 havanese litters under my belt) but we want to change directions from the last breedings. She is a WONDERFUL mother and I am not concerned about her caring for the puppies while I am at work. Its having her near whelp and my being AT work. This is a brand new job so it would be not in my best interest to take time off. I need to think about this long and hard. If anything happened to that little dog I would not be able to live with myself. She is a part of my soul

Is there anyway Aretha's breeder can take care of her when that time comes closer so that you dont need to stress about it while at work? That is a tough decision. I wouldnt do it unless you could be with her/have someone as skilled with her when the date gets closer.

Edited to add: I just wanted to add I have no experience in breeding but I do know what you mean about her being your soul. If I was in your situation I know I wouldnt be able to live with myself if something happened. How new is your job, do you get sick days?

Aretha's breeder is in FL and I am in KY. I would never send her anywhere without me.(I am a neurotic mother when it comes to her.) I do have a friend nearby who can check in on her during the day but it still makes me nervous.

She had her last litter all by herself in the middle of the night and by the time I realized they were born she had eaten all the placentas and cut the unbilical cords and was nursing them...grinning from ear to ear.

When she needed a break from them my cavalier would go in the whelping box and snuggle them. It was too precious.

Thanks for asking about the job...it is going well so far. Such a change from the last horror show I was working at. I work 2:30-11PM which took some getting used to (I am not a night person) but a job is a job and income is what its all about.

That's a tough one Abbe. I don't leave Bandit alone at any point for over a week before her due date....she even goes out shopping and to eat with us. What about your local kennel club? Is there someone there that could babysit her?

Abbe - I've been talking with many breeders recently and from what I can understand the Havanese require so much more pre/post whelping care that it isn't worth the risk. Some people use their vacation time and work half days. I know you probably don't have much built up but maybe that could be a way to make it work.
