Silly question...

This is going to sound silly but here goes...When can I leave Scooter outside in the fenced back yard to play without being out there with him? DH leaves him out there and I freak out and go get him, I think he's too young. He's almost 6 months old. When is it ok to leave them unsupervised???

I'm sure 6 months is fine! But it all depends on what Scooter can get into?

More like, what can he eat! He eats the nastiest things and I seem to get some of it away from him when I see him do it but I guess he's getting into things even when I am around. Maybe I'm just a nervous puppy mommy!

I'm sure it's different for all of us! How do you mean? Are you talking leaving him for like an hour? Is the yard completely fenced? Is he safe from wild animals or birds? Are you away from the street so he won't get stolen?

For me, Shamouti is under 6 months and Rufus is a year older and I don't just leave them in the yard to play. If they are out to go potty, I may be in and out to take out the trash or load the dishwasher, but I check on them often. If they are put out to play, I go outside too.

Roxie won't really stay anywhere without me anyway but I wouldn't leave her out (she's 7 months) even if I had a traditional fenced yard. (We're in the process of training her to an underground fence.) She is just too mischievious and gets into everything!

Ann, that question is very far from stupid. (none are stupid really) It really does depend on your circumstances. I won't leave mine outside unattended at any age because I am afraid of the wild animals and the hawks. Lulu is only 7 lbs and a hawk could carry her away. Our yard is "fenced" but wild animals can jump and climb. Scooter is really small, right?

Not to scare you, but my sister left her pit bull unattended in her fenced in yard a few months ago. The dog dug out from under the fence and got killed by a car. He had a history of digging, though. I would make darn sure your dog doesn't dig before leaving him alone.

Sissy will be 4 yrs. old in December and I never leave her outside in the fenced yard.
Our fence is really well built and 6 ft. tall but I just can't leave her out there. I worry about someone just jumping over and picking her up and over. We have ducks that fly over that sometimes land in peoples yards. They never have mine. A few months back we think we had a raccoon in the side yard and was hissing at Sissy and I was out there. I said her code word and she came running - thank God. If she had been out there alone - I don't know what could have happened.

I have let her out and watched from the window but I really do watch and never walk away.

We have to many Hawks around for Todd to be outside on his own.
I worry that he'll be carried off by one.

It's not a silly question at all, Ann. I always went out with Ricky at that age. I was still trying to get him to think peeing in the grass was cause for a party! lol But, I'd play with him out there, check my gardens for weeds, have him race after me, then water my plants. I used the occasion to be semi-productive while still being with him.

When we got Sammy, they were both almost 8 months and for several months afterward, I still pretty much stayed out there, either on the deck watching them or down in the yard. I'd come in for a glass of water, or to answer the phone and then bring it out with me, but never longer than that.

This was a year ago, and they are now both 2 yrs. old and I do leave them out there on their own. I check every morning that the gate is latched and for the most part, let them do their thing out there while I'm in the house with an ear at the door or a peek from the window. We have no wild animals whatsoever here, so that's not an issue.

I do think 6 months is a bit young to trust out there on his own.
