Maddie's First Day at Her Job

Well, Maddie had her first official work day as a Therapy Dog today. She’s participated in 4 community activities with other therapy dogs as a group such as parades and publicity activities, but today was her first official day on the job. We selected an Alzheimer’s facility near where we live. We met with the Activities Coordinator and toured the facility for about a half hour, then met the other 2 Therapy teams to start our visit. The other handlers both had labs and have been visiting this facility once a month for several years. We spent over 1 1/2 hours at the facility, but usually it will be about an hour.

Maddie was a huge hit (which we all know that Havanese would be), and she did great! They especially loved having a little dog that could sit on their laps and love all the petting and attention. It really seemed to brighten the day of the people living there. We visited the skilled nursing section and the Alzheimer’s section. Some people couldn’t speak, but their face lit up when touching Maddie. Maddie must have met at least 40-50 people, and loved every minute of it. She gave kisses, sat on laps, accepted hugs, and behaved like a pro! I’m so proud of her, and the staff couldn't believe it was her first time. We are scheduled to go back each month and will also be doing Hospice visits as soon as I'm done with my training. She has a Read to Rover activity in September also. She’ll be one busy little girl, but I have to say, it’s a wonderful, rewarding activity for you to consider with your Havs. The other 2 Teams said that they were so impressed with how adaptable and sweet Maddie was with everyone she met. They couldn’t believe how wonderful this breed is. But we all knew that about our dogs, right? All in all, a great first day on the job for my girl.

I echo Laurie's words, but want to add "Job well done, Jeanne!" You are so wonderful with her and she is a testament to how much you've invested into that sweet little girl. She's really reflecting you!

Jeanne,
How wonderful you are to share your wonderful Maddie with other's in order to give them a lil bit of sunshine in their day. Maddie and you are both have a lot of sunshine to share. I love to hear these kinds of stories.

You two make a great team. After all, Maddie couldn't do it by herself! Congratulations to both of you. You have a terrific girl there.

I can't imagine either of mine being therapy dogs. McKenna is much too energetic and can't sit still on anyone's lap for more than a few seconds. She'd inevitably chew on someones oxygen hose or something, and Sedona HATES big hugs so she wouldn't want anyone holding her too close.

Susan- I nearly spit my 7-up across the floor! I love the oxygen hose comment. Nope, that wouldn't be good.

Thanks for the kind comments about me, but I was given such a great girl to work with as a team. Thank you again, Kimberly!
