Thumbs up Homemade ex-pen

I made my own ex-pen when we first got Tika. So I though I would share this with you. It can be made very quickly. I did not want a metal one to scratch up the laminate flooring. I also wanted one that was portable. granted it doesn't currently have a door but I bet it would not be hard to figure out how to add one. It is made out of white vinyl lattice and zip-ties, both very inexpensive. The lattice cuts easily with a hack saw, the holes for the zip-ties were made with a cordless drill. The panels can be cut as short or long and as few or many panels you need to make what ever size or shape you want. It is very versatile. It folds up nicely and can be scrubbed down if needed and wont rust. If you only have carpeted area you could by a scrap piece of linoleum, cut it slightly bigger than the pen, put a few holes in it and zip tie it to the lattice and have a perfect potty training area.

The only problem we had with this was that our smart little Tika learned how to push it over to the stairs, leading down, got just enough of the corner over the top step to perform her Houdini escape tick, so we put a chair in her path and fixed that. So all in all it has been and excellent thing for us, especially when she was in her little puppy stage. Now that Tika is older and potty trained I dont use it as often inside. I included pictures.

Potty training, we slowly eliminated the pads one at a time until she was more reliable.

great for camping.

We found a small tarp to go under half and around to half way across the top, this provided shade and kept her off the damp grass. She slept in the tent with us though at night.

Thankfully, Tika is not a digger so that hasn't been a problem for me.
I guess using it outside could be a problem if you have diggers, any ex-pen for that matter, unless it had a floor to it. How did you solve that problem?

Yes, that makes a big difference. Well Isabelle is my monster who doesnt like to be caged so to be honest I dont. None of my dogs are chewers so I leave them out. I have an xpen up in the house for when I am cleaning or training and just want one. If I am some where like an outdoor dog trial, I would never trust mine in an xpen. I had Belle in the stoller at a dog show recently and it was less than 2 mins when I heard loose maltese over the loud speaker- their were a few forum members than were there too! What works best is one of the little plastic crates and not to give her much space. I have seen her roll it when she has a lot of energy but usually only a couple of feet with some barks. Let's just say I try not to be in a position where I can't watch her!

Maybe Isabelle should win the Houdini escape award! That might be a fun thread to start. . One thing I have to say is the Havanese may be smarter than your average dogs! They certainly keep us more than entertained with their antics.

That seems like a great idea...especially indoors. Cute set up and she's cute as can be!

I think it would be especially good if you had a litter of puppies to contain. Room for everything.
