Front Line Plus is NOT working...

Hello all...Im having another issue w/ Valentino, for those that responded to my previous post regarding Val's facial hair, this is sort of a continuation...

I have been using Front Line Plus on Val since he has come home. It works on his entire body but evidently not his muzzle?? Since the hair around his face has been growing in crazy I have become somewhat obsessed with keeping it clean and combing it down alot thanks to the of the advice I received here in the forum. When I began using the flea comb to get the "gunk n dirt" is when I noticed it. A family of fleas just in his nose area.

Immediately to the bath he went, scrubbed my lil' boy from top to bottom checked every where no fleas ..EXCEPT ON HIS MUZZLE..I dont understand it, is it, and he just had his dose of Front Line Plus 2 weeks ago. Has anyone else had this happen? I use front line plus on my other 2 dogs and no problems EVER.

I guess my question is has anyone else had their Hav's resistant to Frontline Plus. If so what else do you use? I have read some of the post regarding K9 Advantix that product doesnt sound sooo good.

That is so odd! Never heard of anything like that. Do you live in an area with ticks? If not, Advantage is a good product and doesn't have the averse side effects some people notice with the Advantix.

good thing you found them!

Wow...poor baby.

My dogs this year have that black sandy looking stuff, even with flea treatment. It has been more humid, so perhaps more fleas in the humid heat? I hate fleas.

I was thinking that perhaps I carry them in from outside. Some dogs come into our store (REI) because they are learning to be therapy dogs...and I think fleas can jump on me and then get on my dogs.

Poor baby...family of fleas driving him nuts and on his adorable face of all places. Good thing you found them! Gotta get out the gunk and the fleas!

A lot of people are complaining that Frontline doesn't work as well as it used to. My vet was telling me about a med you can give your dog that kills all fleas on them and people say it's safe to use. Is it chantrix? I'm not sure but others may know.

Todd has a flea bite allergy and Advantage wasn't working for him and so I switched to Revolution.
It actually absorbs into the bloodstream and so it can't wash off and it repels fleas as well as killing them if they bite.
I also used Diatomaceous earth in his bed and on the carpet in that area and we've been flea free for several days now! The combo is working great for us so far and so it may be worth a try.

garlic powder for dogs and horses

My havanese mentor used a garlic based powder that you also use for horses and never had a flea. Her dogs loved it. Mine hated it. I gave it to a friend who has a horse.

The downside of these flea treatments are that they are strong. I wonder about the health of my dogs...but it is better than the itching and problems fleas can cause I hope.

I suggest looking into Diatomaceous earth if you want a safe flea preventative.
It's totally natural..made from the crushed skeletons of Diatoms which are single celled water bugs.
They grind up the skeletons until they resemble baby powder but under a microscope they look like shards of glass.
They work as a mechanical killer for all insects by making tiny cuts in their exoskeletons and dehydrating them.
It kills all stages of flea development including eggs and the only possible side effect to humans and pets is dry skin especially on feet.
It's safe to be inhaled (as long as your not asmatic..then you would need to wear a mask when you apply it) and can even be fed in small amounts for internal parasite control.
Here's a link to more information..

Renee lives near me and yes, we have LOTS of ticks in this area.

I have been using Revolution instead of Frontline and have never had a problem with fleas. A few ticks, but they never latch on.

Renee, where do you take Valentino? I have been going to All Creatures on 32 North just past Main Street and have been very happy with them.

I was using Frontline Plus and getting no results, so vet switched us to Advantix. Well, that hasn't worked well either. Kodi is very allergic to flea bites. I am going to ask the vet about Revolution next.

Thanks for the info on the diatamaceous earrth. I have used Pennyroyal oil also with some success. It acts as a natural repellent. It just seems that because we had such a mild winter, the fleas were like an epidemic this year. I noticed the first signs in March.

I am reading this thread with great anticipation. Our vet uses Advantix and after reading some of the bad reactions our Havs have to it, I told her I would like an alternative. I do want to use some tick/flea/mosquito preventative that is safe and effective for Gitter.
