road trip with Max

I'll be going on my first road trip with Max soon! We will be going from Texas to Minnesota. I have a Sherpa, but that's all. Max uses puppy pads, so I'll take them.

I looked on the dogfriendly site and have somewhat of an idea of dog friendly hotels and restaurants, but we will probably stay with friends along the way and eat fast food or on the road.

What else do I need to consider?

Thanks for your help!!

Make sure you have a secure carrier for the car - use the seatbelt on the Sherpa or get him an extra crate just for the car. Also make sure you bring his water from home and an extra leash just in case something happens to your original one. Vet and shot records would probably be a good idea as well. Do you have a tag with his name/cell phone? I'm sure he's micro-chipped but I'd hate to be away from my hometown and rely on some shelter actually reading the chip correctly. I hate leaving tags on them but in this case, it might be safer. Oh and when staying at friends, I'd suggest you put an xpen outside their front door so if someone forgets and leaves the door open that you don't lose your pup. Have fun.

I just did a road trip with Riley and it went pretty well. The sherpa is fine though I liked a bigger carrier strapped in the back. Bring as much as you can that will make him feel like he's sleeping at home...ie: a favorite blanket, toys or bed. I brought Ri's Xpen and he slept in that because he does at home. Also, see about a belly band for him even if he's a great guy at home. He's bound to mark away from home and it will just ease your mind.

Have fun!!

Lisa,
you put an xpen outside their front door What is an xpen? His crate?

Amy,
Maybe Posh and Max need a playdate?! Minneapolis and the big city of Menagha! Max would love to play!

Ok, here's my list: baby wipes, backup leash, paper towels, stain remover, puppy pads, benadryl (?), portable tie-outs, plastic bowl with lid to freeze water in, poop bags, water from home, food, treats, favorite blanket, belly band, Sherpa, xpen, vet papers...

Did I forget anything?

I took the Sherpa out of the bag for the first time yesterday evening and put it on the floor for Max to explore. It's so funny to watch. Max creeps up with his tail and ears down and sniffs it, then lays down in front of it and watches it suspicously. I then gave Max a brand new treat (which he loved and wanted more) and put a treat in the Sherpa. If sniffing could take the place of consuming, then that treat would have been woffed down by now. Instead, the treat is still lying there in the Sherpa this morning.

What are the velcro thingy's in the Sherpa? To hold down the fleece pad? I would think Max wouldn't like those; they might get caught in his coat.

I'm excited! Our first, of hopefully many, road trips!

Lisa, why do you hate leaving tags on them?

Suzy, I read a long time ago that leaving collars on a dog opens them up to the possibility of getting them caught on something or even stuck on another dog's jaw and end up being strangled. Apparently it happens so fast that even if you are there, you may not be able to save your dog. It tends to be more common on puppies. They do have break away collars for dogs now. If you want, I'll find the link.

Oh and an xpen is an exercise pen. Usually eight panels that link together that you can make in any shape to contain a dog. If you have a jumper I'd recommend the 30"-36" heights but normally a 24" is just fine and the cheapest way to go. If you use it quite a bit, the ones where one panel has a door is so convenient. I can't tell you the number of times that I've tripped climbing in and out of mine. I can find a link to petedge's one with a door if you need it.

Lisa,
Thanks for the education on xpens (I'm embarrassed I didn't know!). I found them on petedge. After all that hullabaloo, I've decided to fly and leave Max with dh. I actually bought all of the items on my list! Oh, well. Another day.

Thanks everybody for your help! Amy, I'll wave a big "Hi Yaa" while in Minnesota.

Lisa, Thanks for the explaination about tags/collars. My guys wear harnesses. Not at home - they do pull on each others', but always when we go out in the car. That way, if there is an accident, and they somehow get out, there is another ID on them. Suzy
