Topknots for shorter hair

I thought I would post about the way I do topknots since I had to learn a good way to keep the short hairs away from Cicero's eyes till it could grow out more -- and I've had people ask me how I do it.

First, I make a small ponytail with the band low to hold the shorter hairs. Cicero's has grown out now, but this works great when the hair is 'puppy' short to keep their eyes from getting irritated. Also, I love to see Hav eyes!

Then including that ponytail I gather more hair for the topknot.

Then I put a scrunchie to hide the top band. I used a girlie color this time so it would show up for pics...and because it makes him cute.

You can see from this picture the scrunchies I use are small. I also have tiny clips that I sometimes use in place of the first band to hold the short hairs. They work pretty well also and can be redone when Cicero rubs his head on the pillows to toss them off the sofa. I hope this will help forum members that are new to topknots - and those wild puppy hairs. I use the first tooth on a comb to hook in the band at night and pull out so I can clip the band without cutting any hair. I take Cicero's out each night when I brush him and fix it fresh each morning so his hair doesn't break.

Cicero's such a sweet boy...just letting you do that! Trying to get Riley to sit still while I do anything to his head is next to impossible! He doesn't mind brushing all that much but I think I fussed with his eyes too much when he was a wee pup.

Great visuals! Will try sometime when he's half asleep.

Dale that should be really helpful to the newbies.....thanks for doing that. Very helpful indeed!

This is what I did with Quincy too.....it is hard to explain in words though----I'm glad you took the photos!

Julie, I'm hoping it will help the newbie's. It's hard dealing with those wild short hairs for a while.

Jean, I am a lucky lady when it comes to grooming. Each morning when I pick up Cicero he lays his head on my chest between my boobs and looks up at me waiting for his topknot to be fixed. There is not a single part of grooming that he doesn't like -- and it's wonderful for me!! He has been so sweet to settle into our routine....and I never let him win.

I seem to be able to get the topknot in OK but I like the short bangs too. It isn't a problem because they don't hang in their eyes, HOWEVER, it's the fine little hairs under the eyes that seem to get messed up with the eyelashes and they get in their eyes. Any suggestions for this? It seems worse with Lulu. I also like the small wraps you use. Three times around and they stay in. (Thanks Leslie for that tip).
