San Francisco Havanese Play Date

If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area there is a meet-up planned for Sunday September 7th. If you've never been to one of these you should go. They are great fun for the dogs and their people!! Details below.

Sunday September 7, 2008 at 11:00 AM

Pine Lake Park , San Francisco

For all pertinent information:

For directions to Pine Lake Park :
- go to
- search for " 1 Vale Avenue 94132"
- click "Get directions To here"

If you have GPS in your car, enter:
" 1 Vale Avenue , San Francisco "

We have only four guidelines:
Havanese Only - Companion Havanese, Show Havanese, and Breeding Havanese are all welcome, and they're all equally beautiful, lovable, and perfect creatures at our events (ALL small dogs are always welcome at the beach walks every Saturday morning - see

No females during their heat please. It drives the boys wild!

No retractable leashes. Our gatherings are primarily (not exclusively) off-leash. Pine Lake Park is not fence-enclosed, but it is in a canyon and quite far from the road. If your dog does not go off-leash, please use something other than a retractable leash at our gatherings, as they can become hazardous.

Just down-to-earth dog play. We love sharing experiences and helpful dog care tips, but if you are an expert on breed standards, dog behavior, or anything like that, please don't wear your "expert" hat. Some of our Hav's (and guardians) don't care much about things like "breed standards," and we want everybody to know that their dog is a perfect Havanese at our gathering (as long as it isn't attacking any of us or the other dogs).

My jaw dropped to read that he's actually allowing leashes now.

Thanks Susan -

This promises to be a wonderful gathering - our reminder list alone includes 79 Bay Area Havanese. We may have a couple more meet-ups this year, but they usually shut down in winter because the parks are so wet. This month is a particularly important one for me, because we are celebrating the return of my Jesse to full action after six months of dealing with a horrible paw accident followed by a disabling spinal pain episode. I am so overjoyed to have a healthy little girl again!!!

I’m so sorry if I confused some folks about leashes – we've always allowed leashes at the Havanese meet-ups. The Hav meet-ups share a website with the weekly Small Dog Beach Walks that I also organize, which ARE off-leash only. If you haven't had a chance to join one of those walks, please keep us in mind for Saturday mornings – on Ocean Beach in San Francisco - every week of the year (except one) – rain or shine! Susan & Sally & a few other Bay Area folks I see on this forum can tell you how splendid they are. Our typical crowd these days is between 70 and 120 dogs (and about twice as many people), and there are usually 6 to 12 Havanese there. It’s funny how the Hav’s tend to find each other in the crowd because they like playing with each other so much. Even on rainy days we have at least 30 dogs. Susan has joined us on some of the rainiest days, and my pals McKenna & Sedona (& Steve) have seemed to love it! Info is always available at

Most on this forum are not familiar with me because I don’t really participate much in online stuff. I’m all about getting the dogs together, which I have committed a lot of energy to for almost 4 years now, since Jesse entered my life. There’s certainly been some trial and error to get these public meet-ups to work for the largest number of folks, but they run very smoothly these days. And, I must say it has been extremely rewarding to have met and provided a social opportunity for literally thousands of small dogs and their people. So now that you know who Jesse & I are, please come out and play with us.

I hope some of you can enjoy this Sunday morning with us and our Havanese friends. And if you ever come to a Saturday beach walk please track me down and say hi.
