Changing Colors

Do we know what causes our dogs to change colors? I haven't heard this happen before in other breeds. In people, kids with light hair sometimes have their hair darken as they get older, but it seems with the Havs, their hair always lightens.

I ask because I have noticed that Gryff's lovely toasted marshmallow ears are now almost totally white. Here is a year's difference.

I also tossed in the only picture I have of Gryff and his Mommy because I think the color and texture difference is so staggering.

I don't know anything about havs and color changes (except that my black have is turning gray or silver ) but I wanted to say how adorable the photos are... your son has beautiful eyes!

That was interesting. I hope Gryff is an on/off. I would love some of his toasty color to come back.

Thanks Ann. It's a recessive gene. My husband and I both have brown eyes. He's a very lucky boy!

The color change is amazing to me also. So strange that you can buy a puppy -- and it look like a completely different dog in a year. I would never guess that is Gryff's mother. Your son's eyes....OMGosh...beautiful.

Leslie, NEVER. Just like teenagers, I think these little furbabies are getting out of the crates at night and sneaking out the doggie doors. Growing up, my father raised beagles -- and they looked just like their parents...and never changed. I'm amazed how much different some of the Havs look from their baby pics -- and it makes me want a house full just to watch!!!!

I agree, watching them change is one of the best parts of owning a Hav.

Maybe we should change up this thread to be "parents" and "kids" and how you just don't know what you're going to get....

Here is a picture of my Poshy girl at six weeks look how dark she was. Below is picture of Posh's Mom, Ch. Picosa's Simply Irresistible "Godiva," a chocolate parti and a more recent picture of Posh. I love watching her colors change.
