Question My Rascal Dog arrived!

And good gravy, it's BIG!!!

I ordered the Big Squirt as suggested. I saw the video where she showed how to use it. I saw the dimensions on the website. I thought I had an idea of how big this thing was. Clearly, I was wrong!

I put it in my Iris ex-pen, and it takes up the whole thing! I'm not sure what to do now! I know it's best to keep the ex-pen small at the start, but I don't know if that's possible with this monster in there! There's definitely no room for her crate, or a bed, or anything in there!

I have a second Iris ex-pen. I bought that instead of the expansion panels because it was $10 more but I got 4 panels rather than 2. So I can expand it. But I'm worried that she will then have too much room.

I'm laughing my head off just looking at it!

Suggestions?

Cate

Well, if it's big, it will be harder for her to miss!

Seriously, i used wire, Midwest ex-pens for Kodi, and the large Rascal Dog wasn't a problem... Haven't seen the iris in person, so I'm not sure what size it is.

True! There's no way she can miss it!

The Iris ex-pen is 3 feet square. I was looking at the Midwest wire ones, but I was worried about my boys (7 & 8) running into it and hurting themselves. We have a small townhouse right now, so there isn't a lot of room, but they run around like we live in a mansion! Plus my 7 year old tends to be...uh...a little accident prone! So I went with the plastic Iris.

Like I said, I bought 2 sets, so I have eight 36" panels. Right now I just have the one set put together, and maybe that was unrealistic to begin with. If I add 2 more panels, I can make it 3 feet by 6 feet and fit the Rascal Dog and crate in there. Does that sound too big?

Because this is not going to work!

Hey Cathryn...this is a pic of my set up. It is a Midwest wire expen connected to a Midwest crate. I also have the Big Squirt. The expen area measurements of my set-up is 4ftx4ft total (not counting the crate). Hope this helps.

Thanks for the picture. Unfortunately, since we have the Iris ex-pen, we can connect her crate the way you have, so it has to go inside the ex-pen. Which wouldn't be a problem if it was a 4' x 4', but it's 3' x 3'. It looks like I will have to make it a 3' x 6', and hope there isn't too much room for her to get into trouble!

Yes, I think adding two more panels will work nicely, as long as she has already been well-started on potty training by her breeder. It not, this is actually NOT a bad arrangement. She will be very small, and you can still tuck a bed for her in the corner, and a water bottle hung from the side.

This is almost EXACTLY the arrangement we used for Kodi for his first 2 years. This photo was before we bought the rascal dog, and before we up-graded to a vinyl flooring remnant, but you can see that otherwise, it's pretty much the same set-up. It worked great. We'd probably still use it, except that we had to take it down for a house remodel, and it just never went back up. Now he gets gated in my office (built during the remodel/addition project) when we're out… a little more room, but he still has his litter box and water bottle in here!

Thanks Karen. That makes me feel a bit better.

From what I've heard from others who have puppies from Beth, they come home very well trained. She has them going outside with the rest of her dogs as well.

I have a Lixit bottle on it's way from Amazon, so I guess now there will be plenty of room for that and a bowl underneath for drips!

The trouble with crates INSIDE the ex-pen is that some puppies learn to get on top and use the crate as a launching pad to get OUT of the pen. So keep an eye on that. If you've got a wire crate, you could always use zip-ties to attach it to the outside of the pen. If it's a plastic crate, of course, this would be harder… But then a plastic crate would also probably be too short (height-wise) to keep her in the pen for long.

Yes, I've read about this! Which is why the crate will be in the corner! The ex-pen will be right in a corner, so if she does climb up on the crate, there's no where to go but up the wall!

I do have a plastic crate. That's what Beth, our breeder, recommended. She found with her dogs and pups that they felt more secure and comfortable in the plastic ones. It's not that tall.
