Oh Noooooo! Now Saydee's Sick!

I just found out Saydee has Giardia! I'm so upset. I can't believe it! The vet said for a puppy this young to have Giardia (level 4 whatever that means) she probably got it from the breeder's environment. Now this makes me question my breeder!

I didn't even know she was sick! It was a routine vet appt and I brought in a sample for them to double check for worms, and this is the result. She's had a little looser stool, but I just chalked it up to puppyhood and my changing her kibble. I feel like a bad mom for not knowing! This is not a good day... I feel like crying.

I'm so sorry. You're not a bad mom for not knowing...remember we are not vets...that's what I tell myself.

Did he give her meds? Hopefully she will be better soon.

Yes, she's on meds for 10 days and then we recheck. I hope it goes away! I just sent an email to her breeder to let her know. I didn't accuse her of anything because I can't say for sure. But I do know Saydee hasn't had access to standing water since she's been in my care... our yard is totally fenced... we haven't been camping...

The thought of a puppy drinking giardia-ridden water while under the care of her breeder literally makes me sick.

Maya - Giardia is not the end of the world!!
Alot of puppies get it apparently, and if treated, it goes away quick!

http://www.priory.com/vet/giardia.htm Here is a good link for info. It may not have come from the breeders at all though. So I agree with you, blaming the breeder might not be a good idea. <grin>

Thank you for the link. This is a quote from the website:
"Surveys have shown that about 14% of the adult dog population and over 30% of dogs under one year of age were infected. Once passed, the cysts can survive in cold water for several months."
Wow! I had no idea it was that common in puppies!

Your pups are adorable. I'm partial to their purty black and white coloring

"Whatever treatment is chosen, itis very unlikely to eliminate 100% of the infection in all dogs."

Okay, now I'm freaking out.

Yeah I've heard this last week from my trainer. They can't figure out what is wrong with her lab, they thought maybe Giardia, and now I can't remember what ended up being the issue. Anyway, he is doing much better...so I can find out what they did in the end if you want.
