Teeth Cleaning

Probably covered already, but couldn't find it. What do you use to keep your Hav's teeth clean and healthy? When should a cleaning routine start?
Thanks.

Any canine, enzymatic toothpaste is fine. They come in poultry flavor, malt flavor and some others. Find one he likes the taste of, and let him lick it off your finger to start with. Unlike human toothpaste, it's FINE if he swallows it. (he will! ) Even getting the toothpaste in his mouth will help.

The earlier you start with tooth brushing, the better. An actual "brush" might be a little rough on tender puppy gums, so I'd start with terrycloth wrapped around your finger. You can either cut a small piece out of an old washcloth, or buy specially made terrycloth finger covers for the purpose. The finger covers are easier to control, but the old washcloth is usually free!

After he has finished teething and has all his adult teeth, it's probably a good time to switch him to a soft, small dog (or cat) toothbrush.

well, the experts say it's best if you DO do it daily. In all honesty, we do it about every other day, and at 4 1/2 years, the vet always remarks on how good his teeth look. But, the more often the better, and any is better than none!

We started from the day we brought Mika home and we brush her teeth everyday before bed, just like us! It has become a routine for her and she gets excited when we tell her it is time to brush her teeth. We use a tarter control toothpaste daily (not the best but we are afraid to change since she loves it so much) and we also use Petzlife Gel a few times a week after brushing just to be sure her teeth are taken care of the best we can.

I brush Tyler's teeth everyday and he has only had to have his teeth cleaned once in 16 1/2 years. I do it every morning after his breakfast and he actually looks forward to it.
