Car Sick

I don't know how to get the search engine to work. Sorry about that.

There was a product discussed here that you can get at the health food store that helps with car sickness and generally calms the dog down.

We are going away for the weekend and we're bringing the pooch. It's a 3.5 hour car trip and I would like for him to a) not puke and b) chill out.

Thanks!

Ivy, are you thinking Rescue Remedy?? I will say that although I only give my guys drugs once a year to go on vacation, the Cerenia works wonders on Logan, considering he would throw up 15 minutes into the trip. I tried the rescue remedy but it didnt work for us.

The following works for Benji (he started to have motion sickness at 17-18 weeks) who is 23 months.

1. Look-Out car seat
2. Empty stomach
3. Slightly rolled down windows for fresh air
4. 1/2 tablet of Bonine (recommended by his breeder and vet)
5. Rescue Remedy 20 minutes before the ride

Try to do "fun rides" 10 minutes each 2-3 times a week to get used to the ride. Some pups get over the motion sickness. Benji didn't. I don't like to use any medication, even over -the-counter too much. Our rides are not too frequent and so use of Bonine is limited. Benji is okay for 15 minutes rides He doesn't fare well in a stop and go traffic.

Best, Poornima

Yes, it was Rescue Remedy. Actually, Gryff hasn't thrown up in the car in a really long time. However, he's also never been on a long trip like this one. In addition to the drive to and from, we will be in the car throughout the weekend.

I am giving Bonine to my son who also has been known to throw up in the car. I guess I'll give some to both of them!

I would too, pass it around like Pez before the trip! Scooter is now getting sick on car rides and threw up in DH's car but he hasn't done it in mine yet. He did it in the family room after we got home though!

Thanks Ann. We are making our annual autumn pilgrimage to Lake Placid. We didn't take Gryff last year since he was still such a young pup. We plan on taking him hiking and walk with him around Mirror Lake.

I am slightly worried about the time we are going to be off doing things without him. We can leave him in the hotel room, but he's supposed to be locked in his crate when alone. If I leave him in the crate, he'll bark. I'll test the crate first and see how it goes. IBut I think I will wind up putting the DND sign on the door and let him sleep on the bed and watch TV.
