Gender dislike

Hello to all my wise Hav friends!

MoJo seems to have developed a dislike to male strangers . He will play and be all cutesy with any females we come across during our walks. If a man walks by or tries to pet him, he becomes a "fierce" barking machine! Does this happen to anyone else? Once he gets to know the male, everything is fine. It is just a little embarrassing! This tiny white dog with this menacing bark!
Any ideas for correction?

thanks again............Shannon

It happens all the time with Sophie. Especially teen males. She's ok with both grandpa's though still a little shy at first. Friends of my son's have known her since we've gotten her and she barks at them every time. When I pick her up and put her in the friend's arms she will kiss his face. But, put her down and she will bark at him again. It took Sophie two weeks to warm up to hubby. I keep saying I'm going to keep treats by the door and do the thing that Victoria Stillwell does where each male that comes over gives her a treat until eventually she associates males with treats...maybe.

Unconditional love!

I would work on that and keep treats on hand for men to give so there is a good association developed. I do think some of it is protecting you or possessiveness, but it can be dealt with.

I agree with the treats. Jasper is an ageist!!! he barks and growls at old people! it is so embarrassing! he's getting better though. Lots of treats and getting him to sit and wait until I greet the person.

Stella is the same way. I just figured it was because we don't get many men around here. My son-in-law and one of my friends' husband but thats about it. She barks her head off when a new male comes over.

My friend's beagle has a strong dislike of dark-skinned men. It causes her no end of grief. He even lunged at one guy and nipped his pants as she was passing by. I wonder what is going through a dog's mind when they see a particular type of person.

I know that both my dogs also have a type of Hav they "prefer". Lincoln prefers to play with large white Havs with lots of hair. Scout prefers petite females that are kind of a sable color. Who knew!

Roxie is afraid of strangers altogether... but it seems to be getting better. And she loves, loves, loves little kids... toddlers send her into orbit with happiness!

Thanks, I think she's pretty special too but would've sent her to you this afternoon when she was driving me crazy!
Scooter is pretty darn cute himself!
