Wink Embarrassing trip to the dog park! HELP

Vinny and Lulu are going backward on socializing so I thought I'd take them to the dog park. So we get there and I let them off their leashes and they pounce around sniffing the grass, etc, all happy. There were big dogs and little ones. I'm watching Vinny and looking for Lulu and she was gone! NOOOO, there she was jumping into the lap of a guy in a wheelchair. I go get her and apologize and all's ok.

There were 3 women sitting on a bench. The middle one was, well let's just say a little different. She had on a long bright turquoise dress off both shoulders, flaming red hair wig, real thick with feathers and jewels in her hair and make up like you've never seen. She reminded me of a book I read "Garden of Good and Evil", lol.

So I look over there and Lulu's in her lap and Vinny's jumping up too. I couldn't keep my dogs off people. They didn't want to be with the dogs. They seemed scared.

After a few more of these lap leaps and scratching at peoples legs to get picked up, I gave up and took them home.

So, now, how do I get them to not be afraid of dogs?? Just keep doing it?

Carole, yes! Just keep going. I had to take Kubrick to the dog park for at least a month 2-3 times a week before he wasn't afraid of dogs anymore and anyone who has seen him at a play date can attest to the fact that his is FAR from scared now... he LOVES LOVES LOVES dogs! And yes, it does deserve the all caps. LOL.

I used to for sure put him down if he tried to get on my lap or other people's laps and would let him be. I would only intervene when other dogs approached if I really thought I needed to - it only happened once when three dogs were crowding him and he was REALLY freaked out. But even then I wouldn't baby him. I just held him for about a minute then put him down somewhere else.

Whoa, I've never thought about taking Tucker into a dog park with big dogs loose in there! Is that something I should consider?! It sounds dangerous...I've seen some scary big dogs snarling after others in those places.

Yeah Sheri, you're probably right. But the little one's scare my dogs too. The lady in the turquoise dress told me of a place with only small dogs. I think I'll try that place tomorrow.
Does everyone only go where small dogs are??

Poor babies. I'd still take them so they'll eventually get used to other dogs though. At least they're not afraid of people
Do you suppose the redhead was trying out her Halloween costume?

Stella loves going to the dog park but we're fortunate enough that there are separate enclosures for big and little dogs. She does like big dogs but only one at a time so we go into the 17 inch and under park.

Hi Sheri , dog parks are ok to a degree. Good dog parks should have a separate area for small dogs. Never let them to roam without your immediate attention. Just last week a member of our group saw a chihouhau get killed by a larger dog. There are lots of problem dogs in these places so you have to be vigilant. A fearful dog that runs can trigger an attack. A lot of people like them and they can be great for a dog ,but you have to watch them closely, and a lot of people just let their dog loose and hardly pay attention to them.

Yes, Carole... Kubrick only goes into the small dog park. It's for 25lbs and under.

Our dog park has a side for large dogs and a side for small dogs.
Todd used to be afraid and hide behind peoples legs but he caught on pretty quick and now he LOVES to go.
We alternate between the small and large dog side depending opn how many dogs are there. Today there was a large shepard mix that was a little too rowdy and Todd went Cujo on him..lol

Carole - you should be impressed that they took to the wheel chair person and red head wig lady - I am!!! If they took to them they are very well socialized in my book! (lol) They seem great!

Tugger got over his fear of other dogs just by walking in our neighbourrhood. I would make a point of going out when I knew other's were walking their dogs. When we met I dog I would pat the other dog and make a big fuss about the other dog. The other owner would love the attention of their dog but Tugger learned that other dogs were fun. I also went to many Pet Stores where dogs were allowed so we could run into other dogs. Now we have the opposite problem, Tugger loves other dogs so much that he cries and walks on two legs at the end of the leash if he sees another dog. Quite funny!

I would love to take him to a dog park but ours has only 1 enclosure. I have seen big dogs play with tugger at dog training class and they are not gentle. I would be afraid that they might hurt him or break something. My sister's boxer broke her cat''s paw just by boucing around and the cat eventurally had to be put down due to complications. Do other's let their dogs play with the bigger dogs?
