Well this was new.....

I have a wonderful 5 month old Havanese female, and today for the first time a visitor came to the door and she tinkled everywhere!

Kids come over all the time but this has never ever happened, and last night when my husband came home (the love of Bellini's life) a couple of drops were on his shirt right after he picked her up.

Do they grow out of this? She will be officially 5 months old on the 25th. We have not had her spayed yet as we are not sure of when the best time is, some have told us before she comes in to season her first time, and others have told us to never ever spay a dog until they are 1 year old, so we are sooo confused, and we don't know if the pee pee issue could be related.

Any advise would be appreciated!

I think peeing with visitors would be more of a submissive thing, unrelated to whether she's spayed yet. It's much better to spay BEFORE they go into their first heat, which makes the whole procedure more complicated and risky... so I've heard...

Todd started doing the submissive peeing thing a few weeks ago.
I'm totally baffled as well.
I'm really hoping that he outgrows it.

It actually is not true that spaying before the first heat makes it less complicated... it's the same regardless of when you do it. There have been plenty of research looking at whether spaying after the first heat is better as far as cancer, etc. and that's something that you should do some research on. I'm far from an expert - don't even have a female! - but I do know a lot of the people on this forum wait until after the first heat to spay. Hopefully one of them will come on here and be able to give their insight.

Also, as far as the peeing thing... it sounds like submissive peeing to me, like Maya pointed out above. I would do a search for "submissive peeing" here on the forum and see what threads you can dig up - there are lots. There's a lot of things you can do to help her with this and it's possible that she will outgrow it but it's also possible that she will not. The more you learn about it and try to help her get through it, the likelier it will be that she will be able to outgrow it. Good luck!

Lilly was actually starting her 2nd "season: when she was spayed in September. Her spaye was sch. for Monday and she started on Friday. She did not have any problems. I wasn't charged any more than normally because she had laser surgery other wise I would have. Any questions?

Did she appear to be a little nervous or was she excited?

Hmmmm, could be submissive peeing, or possibly if her bladder was full, she just lost a bit when she got excited.

I had a Lhasa when I was a kid that pretty consistently dripped some pee when she was greeting people that came to the door - she never outgrew it. We ended up putting an oriental rug in the entry that had a wild enough pattern to hide any stains. We knew less than zero about dog training so we didn't even think to work with her on it. Anyway, I'm not sure what you can do about it, but if there is something, it is probably worth a try so it doesn't become a permanent behavior. Good luck!
