I am beginning to have a complex...

So, meeting a few of you this past August and seeing how little of a coat Posh has, I thought "am I doing something wrong?"

I thought maybe I was "over brushing" her and started to skip one to two days. Every time I skipped, especially the two days in between, she would have a few mats and I thought , "this isn't working..."

Most of you know the "equipment" I use is good: CC pin brush, CC buttercomb, CC fine face comb...and I bathe her about every two weeks.

I feed her well too...even put in probiotic supplement, flax seed oil, and have lately been giving her a dried fish treat for more Omega 3's.

I look at her and she looks perfect to me, but on Saturday when we were at the Fun Match, a breeder who knew Posh as a wee one, and the Fun Match judge asked, "Where did her coat go? or What happened to her coat?" something like that, I can't remember exactly because I felt like crap hearing something like that...

Posh's breeder responded "Well, that was her puppy coat."

Anyway, she isn't cottony or poofy or even seemingly "double coated."

I think she's perfect...but I admit it kind of made me sad.

Ahhh, Amy, I think Posh is beautiful! I haven't seen her in person, only in the pictures here on your posts, but I love her coloring. I can imagine how you feel sad, with someone saying that about her coat, though. How sad! However, none of of us absolutely perfect, and other than not having a thick coat Posh sounds like she IS perfection. I'm sending you a cyber hug. It is so hard when anyone criticizes our beloved "kids." I feel that pain when someone says anything against my human kids, for sure.

Sheri and Tucker, who thinks Posh is beautifully colored!

Okay, this is just weird! How'd there get to be TWO posts, just the same?

Hi Amy, Posh is beautiful. I thought Posh's coat was in good condition when I saw her in CA! There is such a wide variation in Havanese coats - Lincoln and Tucker being on the poofy end. But there are quite a few with a flatter silkier coat like Posh's too! Possibly her small body size makes her coat look smaller, just as Lincoln's big body size makes his coat look enormous. Lincoln has a tiny tiny sister (same litter), Fancy, who is around 8 pounds and she has a very different coat type - closer to Posh's than Lincoln's. Have you seen photos of Posh's parents? Maybe they have a coat type similar to hers?

Our breeder, Elaine, explained to us at our last Hav gathering that part of the reason for the variation in looks within the breed has to do with our breed's standard allowing for dogs from 8 1/2" to 11 1/2" shoulder height - that is a huge 3" variation, apparently, as compared to other breeds. That seemed to make some sense to me.

Amy,

I think Posh is "perfect" exactly as she is. She's beautiful, healthy and happy. What could be better. Not having a heavy undercoat sounds like a positive to me, considering what I've been going through with poor Milo. Bailey also (at least so far) has a much less dense undercoat and he's so much easier to maintain.

You know I love, love, love Posh.

Just Milo and me, and . . . Bailey makes three . . . until Ruby said, "hey, what about me?"

I agree with Jane! Oliver and his brother Tucker (same litter) are complete opposites and he is more like Posh.

Sally,((Oliver)) Comet and Pennie too!

I couldn't have said it better!!!! Posh is beautiful & happy - doesn't get better than that.

Just something to think about....At the HALO picnic this summer one of the woman had an absolutely gorgeous Sheltie. Everyone commented on the dog's beautiful, full coat. This dog however had some serious health issues. The owner's comment was that she'd prefer her dog had healthy, beautiful "insides" and an ugly, unhealthy coat.

Thanks everyone!!! Like I said, I knew my beloved forum wouldn't let me down.

I actually talked to my breeder about her coat and she said that Posh's mommy, Godiva, never really had a real thick coat.

You're all right...thank you again times a million and I'll now stop obsessing over my "perfect" hav and give her some loving!
