Question The Vet - How often?

So I got a letter in the mail yesterday reminding me that Beamers 6 month exam is coming up! So my question is, how often does everyone go to the vets? Yearly? twice a year? It's pretty pricey to go 2 times a year just so they can take a look.. you know?? (especially if you have 2 or more!)

Thoughts??

Ryan

Wow! I don't see any need to go twice a year. Sheesh, sounds like a money-maker to me. As long as Beamer seems healthy (we know he does) once a year seems like plenty to me. Then they can do any necessary bloodwork, vaccinations, etc. I usually do once a year in early spring to have a heartworm test so I don't have to use Revolution year-round. In Idaho those nasty mosquitos, fleas, etc. don't pose a threat in the winter.

I live by....if's it's not broke, don't fix it. I have always done a yearly visit for my pets and the only other times they go is if they have a problem...which is rare. I think the mailouts are a way to drum up business!

For a young dog, I only go once a year or any other time that we need a visit. Can you ask why they think they need to see him twice in a year? If it is just for a checkup and there has been no reason to need to watch over anything in particular, I'd decline the appointment.

By the way, twice a year is a good idea for an elderly dog.

Kimberly, what would you consider elderly? Not that Kubrick would fall into that category for a while yet, but just so I know.

And I agree, twice a year seems like overkill. We go once a year.

For a Havanese with a clean bill of health, probably 10 years old. I'd confer with other breeders for their opinions first, but with a lifespan of 12-15 years, they are going to start aging pretty fast after they hit the 10-year mark.

I take Lilly once a year unless there is a problem. My German Shepherd needs more often she has arthritis and a tumor on her hip she is 8 . My Chow mix is 8 also but in good shape so he only goes once a year unless there is a proble.

Ryan,

In my area most training and day care centers require a fecal exam every 6 months. My vet always tells me to just drop off a sample unless I feel they need to be seen.

If it weren't for this forum, I would be taking Castro to the vet for every time he sneezes! DOH!

Well, since my dogs are family and Havanese are part human anyway, I don't take my children to the doctor annually after age 5 years unless they need to go, so why do it with my dogs? 1 year and younger, they go to the vet more often, but after that, only when we need too, like getting health testing done, blood work, etc. I don't give shots to my dogs after 1 year of age either, run titers and they have never needed more shots after the 3 puppy shots and the 1 year booster.

I think your vet might be hurting for business more then anything.
