Question

Okay since I am new to the havanese breed I have a question for all of you who have had this breed for a while. I have a three year old and an eleven year old. Both of my boys have allergies....well my three year olds skin is just horrible. I have tried blowing this off as a food allergy and maybe something the babysitter has fed him has his skin all out of sorts. So this week since I teach I thought maybe his skin would clear up. Well, it has not.....so I have been thinking maybe it is Zoe or maybe the weather. I love my Zoe and would hate to have to rehome her so I was thinking maybe I should get her hair cut and then she would not drag everything from outside inside....She does not sleep in our beds. And honestly he does not mess with her that much. She is much more my dog than anyone elses dog. She has not bothered my oldest sons skin at all....where the chihuahua does break out my oldest sons skin somewhat. Let me know ya'lls thoughts on this one. Thanks! and Happy Thanksgiving.

It would depend on what the allergies are of your kids. Cutting Zoe's hair may help. Bathing her a little more frequently may help also.

So, you have a Chihuahua too?

Yes, I also have a chihuahua. I had her first and I never noticed any skin out breaks. If you could see his poor skin. I just hate it for him.

If the Chihuahua doesn't bother your youngest's skin, then I don't think that Zoe will either; however, Zoe has a lot more potential to bring outside allergens into the house.

I'd cut her down if I were in your shoes. You can talk to your son's pediatrician and/or allergist, but I would think that she would no longer be suspect if she was cut unless your son has developed an allergy to the Chi's dander with time.

I would speak to a dermatologist. There are many skin conditions that are not allergies.

I have also thought about the chi being a problem....because my oldest son will have breakouts from time to time. Today is bath day and I am going to have Zoe cut down just to see if that will help. I have also tried to blow it off as the weather...because it is sooooooooooo CRAZY yesterday we had the heat on today we are running the air. But if I try and knock some of the obstacles out of the way I think I will just feel better that at least I tried.

Thanks for everyones comments and I welcome more.

Exactly what I was going to say. As well has your son been tested to determine what exactly they are allergic to? It would be so much easier to do those two items, allergy test first then dermatologist, rather than playing the guessing game. If you son wasn't bothered by your chihuahua I highly doubt it's your Hav. Keep in mind that Havs are pretty much hypoallergenic (no breed truly is). However, having 2 dogs may just be too much combined.

Chances are if your parents never had kids...you won't either...

Good point, Cheryl. (The younger son's arm description brought eczema to mind, which is not always caused by allergies, but can be.)

Tammy, have you narrowed down the allergies that both of your boys have?

I have awful excema and this time of year it flares up, also in the spring. Mine is related to pollen and weather change.
You can have allergy testing done to narrow it down and I would try cutting your Hav's coat down and bathing her frequently to see if it helps.

Eva, Mom to Todd....2 year old short hair Havanese

My oldest son has been allergy tested and is allergic to EVERYTHING including dogs....but has out grown many allergies. We even did allergy shots for about 4 years....and he just could not handle taking the shots anymore. My chihuahua only bothers him at certain times...my hav has not bothered him AT ALL. We do plan to have our 3 year old tested in December. Havanese=hypoallergenic...that is another reason I chose this breed...and I know there is still that possibility of people being allergic to them as I read when researching. Thanks a bunch!
