Too Big??

Oh my, I haven't had Hobbes weighed since his last vet appt in Jan and now he's 18.5 pounds. All this time I thought he was a big boy at around 15 pounds. Vet didn't say I should be worried just cut back a little on the treats. How big is too big?

Well, can you feel his ribs when gently rubbing your fingers across his side? If not, he's a fatty

Chances are if your parents never had kids...you won't either...

Cindy, my Sedona was over 19 lbs at one point. The vet said she definitely needed to lose weight. I fed her according to the guidelines on the kibble but followed the amount she should have at her ideal weight. We also cut treats down to one per day (except on special occasions) and I bought low calorie treats. She lost weight slowly and safely. At her last vet appointment she weighed 15.7 lbs and the vet said she was now racing greyhound thin (yikes!) so I have upped her intake so that she will be right in the 16 16.5 lb range which he thought would be perfect for her. I did the same for my Sheltie who was very overweight when we adopted her.

Thanks Susan, Vet said to add veggies to his kibble. Have you heard of that? It looks like I was feeding too much kibble with too much cooked chicken plus too many treats. I guess dogs really do resemble their owners!

I top their kibble with a forkful of canned dog food (Wellness chicken) or some turkey from the fridge but it's just a little bit. I haven't heard of adding veggies to the kibble. I bet my girls would like it. They liked the veggies I added when they were on the prepared raw.

I have heard people adding green beans to the kibble. That way, the dog will feel full without all the calories.
