HELP ! need input on Bailey stool

Hi Everyone

this morning I was startled when I went to pick up bailey's stool and it had blood in it. Is this something to be concerned about? Should I call the vet? The blood was watery

Hugs and have a Hava day!

Yeah, I'd take him to the vet! Blood in the stool isn't normal. Take a sample of the stool with you.

Please no matter what you do that Bailey to the vet and when you are there please mention HGE to the vet. It is Hemoralgic Gastro Enteritis and it is becoming more common in the Havanese. This is not something you want to mess around with and make sure that he does not get dehydrated.

Elizabeth, Dont panic yet. My guys too have had blood in their stool when they have had a little diareha or strained. Take a stool sample to the vet when you go, as that will tell them a lot! I am sure she will be fine. Give that little muffin a kiss for me!!

thanks Laurie and everyone. I spoke to the vet and he said to give her chicken and rice for a couple of days and bring a sample in if there is any more blood. She is due to go to the vet on friday to get fix so I will bring it in with me if it stops anyway so they can check. I hope she is ok. She running around like crazy.

Hugs and have a Hava day!

We had a similar issue with Sully last winter. We found out that the Heartguard was what was causing it.

I had the same issue with Jasmine a few weeks ago. We took her to the vet and just as we walked into the examining room, she went right there on the floor !! Talk about a fresh stool sample !! Sample was tested and came back negative. Doctor said Jasmine probably had something going on in her intestinal tract. She was given an antibiotic and was put on a chicken and rice diet. Solved the problem immediately. Every situation is different and I'm happy to hear you contacted the vet. Try not to panic just yet. Please keep us posted.

Bailey seems to be doing okay. There has been no more blood in the stool. We will bring in a sample anyway Friday when she is scheduled to be fixed. I want to ask another question when she gets fixed they wanted to know if we wanted to run blood test on her. Is this necessary? Because of the blood issue I thought about it but they wanted to do it even before this was an issue. What do you guys think. It is another $100 and if it something that I should do I will do it but I dont want unnecessary expenses. I never did it for Mollie when she got fixed so I think that it something my Vet is doing now.

Yes, Elizabeth, I recommend getting that blood test done before surgery. It will tell your veterinarian about Bailey's overall health status. It can also alert you to things that don't always show other signs early like liver disease.
