Smile Grooming

My little Sofie comes home on January 14th and I was wondering what grooming tools I will need in order to keep her coat from matting. We used to have a Maltese years ago and her hair used to matt really easily. Does the Havanese have the same kind of coat? I want to start grooming her right away so she gets used to being brushed etc.

You should definitely start grooming her as soon as possible so she gets used to it. Their coats are quite different from Maltese, but they definitely will mat if not groomed regularly!

There are LOTS of threads on the forum on grooming tools, so you can do a search on that. But the most common tools you'll hear people use as their go-to tools are the Chris Christensen 005 Buttercomb, a CC face comb and a CC wood pin brush. You can add other tools as time goes on, but these will give you a god start for your puppy!

Question Grooming

Thanks for the info on grooming tools. Where can I get the Chris Christensen products in Canada. Would stores like Petsmart carry them?

I'm from Canada also and I know petsmart doesn't carry them. I would love to hear from someone else on the forum where they get theirs though. Especially if they are from Ontario also.

looks like they have their own website that you can order from.

One factoid I found helpful when I was in puppy class, a coat can mat at any length, even an inch long. also the Hav coat varies widely, so it's like a box of chocolates.

I'm in Ontario and did quite a bit of searching before I found somewhere that ships to Canada. I know CC doesn't directly from their website, but they do sell to other companies that will ship to us. The main two sites I've found are Cherrybrook and Dog Show Store. Cherrybrook uses a third party warehouse that gives us a US address then ships to us from there (I've yet to use Cherrybrook). Dog Show Store will ship directly to us, but shipping is ridiculous. When I bought hopefully "one time buys" like a brush and comb I just paid the insane shipping (I think it was like 40 dollars) because I knew it'd pay for itself vs if I kept having to re-buy lesser quality grooming tools, and I wasn't sure how comfortable I was using that third party shipping site. For things like shampoo that I buy semi-frequently, I buy from k9groomingsupplies.com. It's a site my breeder recommended to me, and they're based out of Toronto (if I remember correctly) so shipping is much more reasonable. They also have good quality brushes and combs (I have a Vellus pin brush that works well) if that's something that interests you.

Sorry for the novel, just thought I'd share my experience!

I live in the U.S. and have purchased goods from Cherrybrook a number of times and have always been happy with their service so I think you can trust them with a Canadian order. Good luck! -Jeanne-

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I'm in Ottawa and I got mine from just gifted and their shipping was very reasonable!
