Red face Need a snappy comeback when people think Henry is growling

When Henry and I are out and about, he likes attention. If for some reason he thinks he is not getting the attention he believes he should have - he reminds folks by "talking". It sounds like this" WRRRRRRR (quick-breath) WRRRRRR!!

Some of you who have met Henry have heard this or perhaps your hav does this.

Anyway, people seem to think he's growling. he scares children, and then other people will reprimand him by saying, well we'll have none of that.

What do I say to these people who think that WRRRRR is GRRRRRR ? ? ?

Does he have a favorite toy that he will "talk" to?

Honestly, I wouldn't try to have a verbal comeback because so many dog owners have said that their dog has never done anything mean - and then they bite a child. I'm not saying Henry will, but I don't think you should just dismiss the sounds as being friendly or they might believe the real nincompoops who say the same thing.

If he has a toy that he will also talk too, you can pull it out and show them that it is his way of being vocal and interacting in a happy way. If you can demonstrate that it isn't malicious that is better than having you verbally dismiss it, IMO.

Max talks to us the same way and I think it's adorable! I would simply reassure people and keep distance between the people and dog. I wouldn't want a nervous reaction in people to cause a negative response in my dog. Like Kimberly said, you never know.

Well, usually I say , happily; "he's talking!, that's how he talks!"
I think it's cute too, I mean, his tail is wagging, and he usually in 10 seconds away from going to their ankles and flopping over for a belly-rub!

Vinny does that too. When we come home he is so excited he RLH and grabs a toy and runs back making that sound the whole time. He tail is going a mile a minute too. Just tell them he is so excited to see you he is beside himself. It stops in a minute when you pay a bit of attention to him.

Yep, Todd's a talker too. He loves to WRRRRRRR while he RLH or when he meets new people.
If they shy away from him he barks...just to make it more obvious that he needs petted.
It can be frustrating because he really wants petted..there is no malice in his behavior but people sometimes think that he's a vicious little ankle biter.
I'm hoping that obedience classes will help because when ever he see's people or dogs he WRRRRR's and barks until they pay attention to him and then he's fine.

My Cooper does the exact same thing. I can see how people confuse it with growling because it's a low, deep, almost vibrating sound that he makes. If you saw him when he was actually growling and could compare the body language, you would see it's totally different, but that doesn't help at the moment of the "talking".

The weird thing with Cooper is, he usually saves this for his most excited times with his favorite people (Cowboy John mostly) He also uses it when he's frustrated about not getting the attention he so richly deserves!

Exactly. So you all understand.

Ha ha, actually when we went to puppy training at PetSmart, Henry took the opportunity to sit in the middle of the group and WRRRRR, I guess he figured he had a good audience, ha ha.

The instructor at the time said to me "MAKE him stop".

Thanks all, i guess I will just continue with telling folks he's talking.
I do, really, love it when he does this.

Riley talks also, what I will usually do when he gets like this is ask him to sit before the person can approach him. This works great with kids as they can be a little scared and move fast which will cause Riley to jump on them scaring them even more.

My Molly does the same, and I swear it's her "puppy laughing"!

When she plays by herself (or with other dogs and/or people), she WRRRRRs all over the place. If people who don't know her seem trepidatious or frightened, I usually pick Molly up or have her sit at my side...her tail wags a mile-a-minute...it's just her joy and sense-of-humor coming through!

I don't offer an explanation. It's something that people either get... or not!
