> ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES
> OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

> WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,
> AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
> A SOBER THOUGHT

>
>
> THE VERY THOUGHT
> BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,
> I DROPPED TO MY KNEES

>
>
> THE SOLDIER AWAKENED
> AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
> 'SANTA DON'T CRY,
> THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;

>
>
> I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE

> WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
> WH ISPERED, 'CARRY ON SANTA,
> IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE.

Michelle,
What a wonderful, and very moving poem. Of course I cried - and due to the emotiona time I am experiencing right now.

My youngest son just signed up with the ROTC National Guard this past week, and as a mother am SO PROUD of his decision, but at the same time, am terrified for his safety. It is HIS choice, as I feel all these fine men and women - choose to make the world safe and better.

Thank you for that!!
Laurie

While I'm absolutely positive this was meant in the most positive and supportive way from a good place, but as a family member of fighter pilot serving, I had the opposite intended reaction to this poem.

My brother is serving in Iraq, has just found out his tour has been extended, and keeps telling me that he can't believe the disgusting amount of waste this war is. I honestly wish I could go into details about some of things he has told me, because it has blown my mind, but obviously for security and privacy reasons I cannot.

However, I do know, he'd be disgusted by the rhetoric in this poem and while I know we all have our own opinions and experiences, I believe the best way to honor our soldiers is to demand that they do not have to keep going back tour after tour. To "yell loudly" to our elected officials to demand that when they are promised that they will be coming home in January they actually come home in January vs. finding out that they will have to stay until May or longer.

Sorry, I just had to say how I felt because it's just too close to me right now. Again, this is my own experience, I own it and I won't judge you or other's experiences but I had to put a different angle on this.
