When do we know it's time for another?

Evye is 12 weeks old. I love her to pieces. I have always been a multi-pet owner and since all my Himalayan felines are now gone, Evye starts my new pet family. I am new to puppies and dogs but I do know I just adore her and this breed. My first thought was maybe a year, 1-1/2 years I might add to my family. I love her puppy stage but I know once we get through all these puppy traps, gates, ex-pen, puppy paraphenalia, etc...not so sure I will be anxious to go back to this. Is it absolutely too early for another or could it be the best time so they can play, be close to the same age and share lots of puppy stuff in common? Open to your expertise in pups, dogs and especially the Hav breed.

In my opinion, only you will truly know, but... I'd highly advise that you spend a lot of time with Evye and get through the potty training stage first. If you can get your first Hav through this stage, the second one is a ton easier because they usually follow the lead of the first one. Potty training two puppies is not easy and you may never be successful, unless you have a lot of small dog experience prior.

In addition, if you can get Evye into some basic obedience classes and work with her individually, you'll build a wonderful bond together. That can be very beneficial when #2 joins your home and you already have the foundation set.

I personally think it's good to wait until the puppy is six months old before adding another to your family. This gives you a good chance to bond and working on some training.

I agree with Kimberly re: the potty training. I can't even imagine potty training two dogs at once... yikes! We decided to wait until Kubrick was at least a year old and as it turns out, we're getting a puppy very very soon and Kubrick is now 20 months old. I think that was a good time, though it would have been good when he was a year old too.

In my opinion it is a lot easier transition when your other dog is completely trained. I added Dora when Belle was 2 and Dash came into the mix when Dora was 3 (and Belle was 5). He came totally potty trained (yeah that was very nice!) but everything transitioned perfectly. He never went thru the chewing stage. He really just followed the dogs with everything else.

I am not an expert, but I added dog # 2 sooner. We got Brutus on March 18th and added Roxie on June 23rd. Brutus was well on his way to being trained. Roxie followed him well. What worked for us was keeping them both in an ex-pen with a couple small crates for rest. I hapd my children close together, too, so I am not sure if this would work for the average family.

I got 2 dogs very close in age, and I had difficulty getting the second to focus and bond with me. Plus, I missed enjoying the first dog fully, as she had to share me at such a young age. If I could have done again, I would have waited at least 6 months before getting another. And it's really hard to potty train two at the same time!
