No More Bully Sticks-what a mess!

Yesterday, my photo of the day was a couple of my dogs truly enjoying their big bully sticks. I was so proud of how cute they were...and they were freshly groomed by me and smelling so nice. Then I come home from work today to a unusual odor.

The bully stick remains after "leaving" the dogs was all over the couch, the back of their legs, rear, and carpeted steps...and a few other places. I just got through washing them both (rear ends only) and remembering why I usually keep them in shorter coats. I also haven't given them a bully stick in a very long time and now I remember why also! When they were younger, it took them days to go through them...now they can do it in about six hours.

The first photo is Riki's poopy butt, then him watching me clean the floor, and then his wet, yet clean, butt! NO MORE BULLY STICKS in this house ever! I think that the tooth cleaning sticks they eat give them the runs as well. Back to just eating regular food and good old tooth brushing alone!

This happened with Ozzy when I gave them to him all the time. Now their treats every long while and that seems to be ok for his stomach, as long as it is a small one!

OMG Linda, I can feel your frustration!

I haven't given bully sticks since Salsa was about 6 months old. They smell too much and never found the odor free ones. I do give the regular size flossies, but I cut them in half (pruning shears work great to cut them) because she'll go through a whole one in about 30 minutes and I don't want her to eat that much.

Yup, moderation here too. I only let them chomp away on them for about 25 min or so. Then I take them away for next time. This seems to ward off poopy butts and makes the bully sticks last a long time!

I thought that was gooey bully stick residue on your Riki!

The pizzle is soooooo smelly, I just have a really hard time with it. That and the dogs get overly possessive about them, with Sammy hiding his and then trying to steal Ricky's. Oh yeah, and I can't stand the smell!!!!!!

Pooor Linda. That happened just once with a certain type of bully chew. We stick to the Merrick flossies now, so far so good.

Yep, moderation here too. I give Benji and Lizzie chew treats for just abou 25-30 minutes. I found that the "Pig in a Blanket" chew treats available at Trader Joes' do not give them runs. These treats don't smell. As to Merrick Flossies, I cut them in half.

Best, Poornima

Ewwww! I have never given a bully stick and now I'm really glad. I stick to Merrick Flossies and Merrick's Texas Toothpicks for a quick, easy treat. The Merrick Wishbones last a long time and the dogs don't go quite as nuts for them.

I guess I'm quite a fan of the Merrick products.
