winter clothes

I live in Vermont and have always had larger dogs, which shed. I now own a 4 month old Havanese and like to do some activities out side with him. Is it important to get a coat for him or are they good on their own. I don't know if I'm just falling into the dressing the small cute dog image or is it necessary to keep him warm?

earfax is up in Vermont quite a bit with her fur-babes Mollie and Baily. She'd be able to tell you what she does. But mostly, in the cold, they havs should have some kind of coat on. I have a coat for cold/snow and another for cold/wet.

And, welcome to the forum! We will want to see a pic of your hav!

I think that if they are cold, you put a coat on them. If it is for a brief run in and out, it might not be necessary. But, if they are shivering, by all means, they need coats.

First, welcome!

In my opinion, it really depends on the dog, and most importantly how you feel about it. Cody doesn't mind the cold and snow at all - I don't think he'd mind being out in any weather, without a coat/boots. Tess doesn't mind the cold, she just hates the snow on her feet so usually wears boots when we walk. I tend to put a coat on both when the temp drops below 20 and we're going to be out for more than 20 minutes but that's probably more for my benefit than theirs. I've seen some post that they always put a coat on when the temp drops below 30.

HI welcome to the forum. I am in Vermont almost every month and as you know it gets pretty cold lol 2 degrees on December 30 (ouvay) When Mollie was a pup I always had a coat or a sweater on her when we went there . Bailey is very tiny and her fur is very short so I actually have to double layer cause she starts to shake with just a coat . Mollie fur was longer(recently cut it) and I usually throw a sweater on her but if it is colder then 20 I put on a coat. Hope this helps

I would love to see pictures of your Hav.

Hugs and have a Hava day!

Thank you for your replies. It helps to know. He seems fine in the snow most the time. I did take him cross country skiing and got a coat for him then. Half the time he is in my sling and the other he is running with us. He seemed to have a great time. he is chewing the things right now so no time for pictures yet. got to go
he looks alot like Bailey though

thanks again for the replies

Welcome to the forum! I wondered the same thing myself. I live in Florida, so I never thought I'd have to think about that. But, my Hav shakes in the morning when it hits 50. I thought 50 is still pretty warm, but the shaking makes me wonder if he's too cold. I'd love to hear what everyone does.
