Fascinating book

I've just discovered a book that many of you will probably know already, but for those of you who don't: it's called "Canine Behaviour - A photo illustrated handbook", and is by Barbara Handelman. There are 1000 photos of wolves and dogs, lovely quotes about dogs throughout, really interesting vignettes and descriptions of all aspects of how dogs and wolves behave and what we can learn from their evolutionary connectedness, definitions of training methods, ethological research, studies…everything. I have only managed to put it aside quickly in order to post this. If only we could recognise all these signs and behaviours and body postures and interactions we'd all surely be hugely better equipped to understand our dogs.
Amazon has it (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...rated+handbook) but I found it cheaper by scouting around a bit (I'm in the UK, so not much help). It's expensive, but SO useful.

yeah thanks Lalla, she is a great authority and one of our IAABC members, I'll keep it in mind. My book budget is a little stressed ,as \I just paid nearly 90 bucks for my last one.

I'm really glad you know of her and rate her, Dave. My budget is now seriously stressed! It's less expensive in electronic form, but although I love my iPad for reading books, for reference books that are largely photographs e-books really aren't helpful. You need to be able to flick too and fro in a way that just doesn't work on an iPad; or at least, I personally don't find it a good way. Some of the prices for this book are enormous. In the end I found a copy for £23 (just under $40) and it's SO worth it, but bang goes any further extravagance for a while!!

I agree completely, Lalla! I love my iPad, but find it annoying for reference books. I DO use it for a FEW reference books that i use for field studies, but that's because the paper versions are too heavy to travel with.

Yes, I too use the iPad for reference books too heavy to cart around, or if I'm travelling far and don't want to have to choose what to take! I've occasionally downloaded training books and find it really unhelpful navigating to and fro, and regretted not going for a hard copy. But other dog books that I like (I'm obsessed, at the moment, on Toni Shelbourne's "The Truth about Wolves and Dogs") are great to have on the iPad as long as they are not going to be used for practical work. That book actually does have a lot of practical advice, but you don't need to cross reference particularly.
