SPARCS Conference 2014

For those of you who watched the SPARCS conference (Society for the Promotion of Applied Research in Canine Science) on the internet last June, you know how FANTASTIC it was. I spent the weekend GLUED to my iPad screen, even though i was away on vacation.

I vowed that, if at all possible, I'd get there in person this year. GUESS what?!?!? They're bringing it to me!!! It will be held in RI this year!!! I urge any of you who have an interest in the SCIENCE of dog behavior to go, if you live close enough. If not, STILL set aside the dates on your calendar. Last year they streamed the entire conference live, for free. It was amazing. There may be a fee this year, but, believe me, it's worth EVERY PENNY!!!

Thanks Karen, for the info; I'll try and catch the streaming, though times of day might make watching in the UK tricky if it's streamed live, and getting to RI trickier! But it sounds so interesting and I am, as you know, REALLY interested in the science of dog behaviour.

It was an outstanding conference last year. Not an uninteresting talk in 3 days! You can buy access to all of last year's talks to watch at your own leisure (access is for 1 year) but it's not inexpensive. Still, if I hadn't seen most of it live, I would do it!

I wanna go! I don't think I can make Nationals this year, so this is great! How do I find out about hotels?

I e-mailed the organizer yesterday. He said they'll be posting the details in early Feb. I'll let you know as soon as I hear!!!

I see the speakers were announced. I only recognize Coppinger and McConnell. What can you tell me about the others?

Well, both of those are fantastically interesting; I really like the Raymond Coppinger theory of domestic dog origins, it seems totally plausible to me that dogs should have self-selected for the abilities needed to live in proximity to humans, rather than that humans did the initial selecting. I read his book "Dogs" and was utterly compelled by his argument….and all the McConnell books I've read have been really good, too, especially "Other End of the Leash".

I saw they were on the list… Can't remember who else. I'll tell you, though… I didn't know all the names last year either, and there wasn't a bad (or even uninteresting!) speaker in the lot. I suspect that this year will be just as good.

I read "The Other End of the Leash" recently and I have to say there's another book that's fairly similar that I liked much better. It's called "Inside of a Dog" by Alexandra Horowitz.
