Joining breed clubs??

What does anyone think about joining breed clubs? I was looking at the Havanese Fanciers of Canada (a propos that brilliant little book on grooming, From Nose To Tail), and wondered if it was worth being a member of such an organisation? I could become a foreign member, I guess. Just wondered if anyone else does that? I'm not sure, actually, how I'd get sponsorship, since I don't know anyone who could sponsor me!! But anyway, was interested to know if any of you DO belong to that, or other Havanese breed clubs and whether you think there is any more to be had from them that we don't already get on this forum?

I am probably going to try to become a member of HCA. I want to support my breed, and enjoy getting to know other Havanese owners. I had a great time at the specialty last year.

The local clubs probably vary. I happen to be a member of our local club because I went to the meeting when it was decided to form the club, and by being there and giving them my name and address, I became a "charter member". Unfortunately, the powers that bee in this club are being very exclusive in who they let join, and keeping people hanging for 6-9 months before even giving them a decision on whether they are "acceptable". It's pretty sad.

I suspect that not all clubs are like that, though.

As I understand it, the UK club is (as with many other breed clubs here) fraught and riven with disagreements, divisions and strife. I don't know what the world of dog breeding is like in the US, but here there seems to be so much discord. Oh so it would seem to me, but how would I know? I only really know about Cotons and Havanese, and maybe it's something to do with rare breeds (both are classed as such here)? Perhaps the world of these two breeds is small enough for problems to show up, or brew up, in a way that wouldn't happen if there were lots and lots of breeders. I don't know. I don't think I would ever want to join any UK Havanese club, at least not at the moment.

I imagine there is lots of "snobbery" going on in some of these clubs.

On what basis would they exclude people? I've never belonged to one, but assumed it was just for sharing love of the breed. Doesn't sound like much fun to me, if they're going to be all snooty. I thought about joining the Cascade Havanese Club around here, but I know how it would go. It is volunteer run, and I can not spare any more time to volunteer for things! Maybe some day, but only if it's fun, because Benjamin and I mostly just want to play.

We don't know why they were excluded. The board, in its infinite wisdom, won't tell them. They were just told they can try again in another 6 months. But if they don't know what they are doing that is "unacceptable now, how can they hope to "mend their ways" and be deemed acceptable the next time around? Again, other clubs may be TOTALLY different. This is the only one I have any experience with.
