Buying Heartworm Medicine Online?

Castro's heartworm med prescription is due, and before I fill it, was wondering if anyone uses these online stores (800petmeds, etc) to purchase their meds?

My vet is charging about $75 for a 6 month prescription, and these websites offer the same product for much less (found 6 month supply for $49).

I am very comfortable buying the meds online, but hoping for some suggestions from people..

Thanks again!

My trainer told us that if you purchase from the vet and your dog does develop heartworms, etc. the company (Frontline, etc.) will pay for the cost of treatment. The same guarantee is not in place if you buy on-line. Don't know if it's true or not....

My vet told me that there's no guarantee if you buy online...

Giotto is on Interceptor and his vet charges $6.50 a tablet. Last month I ordered a six month supply (on sale) from 1-800PetMeds. It came to less than $4 a tablet. I have only used one dose but so far so good.

I am also going to order his flea/tick med from PetMeds because again their price is better. I will just order small batches and see how it goes. I've previously used Frontline from the vet and Giotto had ticks on him all summer. I don't think Frontline from PetMeds can be any less effective and at least it is cheaper.

Just to add, a friend of mine uses Dr. Smith and Foster (I think that is the name.), and she's been using them for years with no issues.

So no guarantee if meds are bought online... gotcha...

Is it worth buying the meds online, versus via the vet?

I mean, as long as you feed it monthly, why would the dog catch heartworm?

I can only speak for myself but I will continue to by Giotto's heartworm and f/t online because the cost is much less. It's also convenient because it comes to my door.

Also, 1-800PetMeds does off a 100% guarantee (according to their site).

I also buy from 800petmeds. My vet told me the companies don't sell to these internet site, such as petmeds and petedge, so who really knows what you are getting. He also warned me that they would not back the product, because they don't sell direct to these sites. I did call K-9 advantix and they confirmed that they DO sell to these sites and back their product. I will also continue to buy online to save a buck!

I did want to second what Linda said. Call the company if you're worried and ASK them if they sell to whatever internet company you're buying from. Of course your vet will tell you to buy from his/her own practice and not online... they make money from you buying from them! It's just common business sense. Do your own research and make your own decisions based on that research.

I called Interceptor and they stated that they distribute their product to 800petmeds. I then called 800petmeds to ask about their guarantee (as stated on their site) and they back the manufacturer guarantee and also will replace the product if the dog won't take it or has outgrown the weight limit. They'll exchange it, no questions asked. I felt very satisfied by their answers.

Imo, the vets are going to push their products and want you to buy from them because they get money back on what they sell. My vet is still pushing Science Diet on me. It's to their advantage if you buy from them so of course they are going to advise you against going anywhere else.
