Flea Prevention

I know this topic has been discussed so many times on here, but I'm still at a loss for what to give Lola. She was originally on Frontline, but after having a few fleas about a month ago, I went to the vet and he told me it really doesn't protect the dogs anymore. He recommended Comfortis but told me that it will probably make her sick, so I decided to go with a topical prevention, Vectra. I gave it to her about two weeks ago with no problems (other than a little itching) and as of two days ago she has fleas again! I gave her a bath with Dawn and as I was blowdrying her, I still found a live flea She has been very uncomfortable and is itching and licking a lot!! I researched Comfortis and read some pretty bad experiences people have had. I know there are risks for pretty much all medicines and vaccines we give our dogs, but I would really prefer a topical preventative rather than an oral preventative (even though she is on Heartguard Plus each month). We now live in Florida and the vet has mentioned that the fleas have been really bad here. What do all of you use and have found to work for your babies?

I do not like Comfortis. My Yorkie never had a problem until after I gave her Comfortis. I was told it was safe and to just give it with food. Her liver enzymes started increasing and she ended up on a lot of medicine and very expensive testing every 6 months. After about a year and a half from using Comfortis ( I was told it was not the problem causing the elevated enzymes) I lost my sweet girl to liver failure. She never had problems before that. I googled and saw so many others with the same story. Sammi will never take that awful drug and I tell anyone who will listen to avoid it. I use Activyl if necessary and other times I just use Adams flea shampoo. I'm in Alabama so fleas can be a year long problem but I try to be very careful about using too much of any product.

Have you treated the house? If she became infested that quickly again, it sounds to me like they might have set up housekeeping…

The one time we have had a flea problem, I treated the whole house with Sentry Natural Defense herbal carpet powder, rubbed it in well and waited 24 hours as directed. (even though the place smelled like the herb cabinet! ) Then I washed all his bedding in hot water vacuumed the house and threw out the vacuum cleaner bag. Problem completely solved.

As Linda said, tough, I'm here in the north east too… We have bad tick problems up here, but I don't think our flea problems are as bad as yours!

Wow that is horrible! I am so sorry to hear about your yorkie Thanks for your input, I am really not comfortable giving it to her and decided not to buy it.

I hadn't thought of that! It does make sense though that she now has fleas…again! The housekeeping I did at the time was all of my bedding and hers, but I think I will have to go at it more aggressively this time, I will definitely pick up the carpet powder you recommended and follow what you did. We used to live in MA and the dogs I had before Lola never really had flea problems, I feel horrible she has been suffering from them Thank you for your advice!
