Well,

Take the sweater off when he's inside and doesn't need it, the longer they have clothes on, the more/worse they mat. Typically, if I just put a sweater or coat on Guch for a walk, she won't have any mats, maybe one or two little ones, but if she wears the sweater for more than 30 minutes, the mats grow like weeds. lol

You can make sure the fur is down around the legs (straighten it out after you put the sweater on) and I always cut a hole for the harness if the sweater doesnt' have one.

Kara, I love Gucci's new avatar. If you put the harness on top of the sweater would it make her mat more or less??

Daisy's Christmas Sweater

She matted under the arms and a little at the top of the neck. She only wore it for a while.

I think fleece lined clothing makes them matt less, or silk/satin. The coat glides over that.

I didn't just get havanese, I got a lifestyle!

Thanks so much for the tips! Ugs, they didn't have a good selection at Petco! I got one sweater and it is a little snug. It doesn't look good and I think it will definitely cause Peanut to mat. I think I saw a thread around here about good places to buy sweaters?

Thank you!
I haven't tried that because both of her harnesses are perfectly fitted and there isn't much room to grow (or for a sweater!) They aren't tight, but would be if I put something under it. lol

Satin is a good idea, I'm torn on if fabric makes a difference or not though because Gucci still got mats with her satin dress on, so IDK, in theory...its plausible, but why didn't it work for ME?

I have not had any positive experiences with sweaters... if they so much as touch the dogs they get armpit mats. Right now Carmen had to fat mats on that area and she wont let me get them... will have to shave/cut those.

Estrella, thanks for sharing! Maybe I will skip the sweater? I am very concerned about matting. There was a bit on the back of Peanut's legs that he would not let me get... the groomer had to cut/thin them...

Maddie was getting alot of mats every single time she wore her therapy vest, even if it was just for an hour. Debby (Salsa's mom) suggested I try lining it with satin. I bought some good quality satin for under $1 and lined it. What a difference! No more mats! I'm wondering if you could make a slip on "tee" or something out of satin to wear under the sweaters?

Dont they make satin belly bands too which are supposed to prevent matting? I bet satin lining would help, but at that point you might as well make a satin kimono and a tiara for your pooch

I think if the coat is really short you would be able to get away with less mats during the sweater time, but longer hair doesnt seem to work with it.
