Rescue Puppies

I am new here, please bear with me as I don't know the lingo. I found this site while searching for a Havanese puppy. My husband and I agreed that we would like to add a puppy to our family. When we made the decision, I knew I wanted a small breed, however I wanted to do research on the different small breeds to determine which breed would best fit into our family. Havanese came up on top of the list, not only did I fall in love with their beautiful little faces, their personalities sound wonderful. We are animal lovers and very honestly if we had the money and the space we would run our own rescue both for cats and dogs. We currently have 2 dogs and 3 cats. All 3 cats were rescues. Since we are interested in a puppy only as a part of our family and not for show or breeding, my husband suggested that instead of buying a puppy we should check into rescuing a puppy. The problem is, I really don't have any idea how to go about doing that. We live in Northern New York State. I have not been able to find a rescue that is even located in New York State. I feel we can only take a puppy due to the other animals, I would not want to risk the safety of a rescue dog or the safety of my other animals by bringing an older dog into our home.

I know from reading the posts that many of you here are involved in Havanese rescue and fostering and I am hoping that you can give me advice and maybe point me in the right direction. I will share our family make up and lifestyle with you so that you will have a better idea of the environment that a puppy would be going into. We own our own home and live in the country, our property consists of approximately 3 1/2 acres. I have 3 daughters ages 18, 14 and 11, the 18 year old has graduated and left home :-(. My husband has a 17 year old daughter and a 14 year old son (he lives with his mom and is with us on the weekends). Our dogs are a 4 year old female Border Collie (Spayed) and a 1 1/2 year old male Shepherd/Malamute mix. As previously noted, we have 3 rescued cats, 2 neutered males one that is 7 1/2 years old, the other is approximately 4 years old. The newest addition is a female kitten that is approximately 6 months old and on her way to the vet this week to be spayed. Our dogs have a runner in the yard that they are connected to when they are outside without us and the cats do not go outside except on rare occasions when one of the kids puts a leash on them and takes them out for fresh air. All of the animals are friendly and outgoing not just with those of us in our family and each other but with other people and animals as well. They are all showered with love and attention on a daily basis and when discipline is required it is done with a firm voice and a trip to the crate, they are never physically disciplined. Although my husband and I both work, I am in a position where I can bring a puppy to work with me. I have my own private office and my employers are animal lovers too. Any puppy that I get will be very well socialized and showered with love and affection. We are ready, willing and able to give a puppy a forever home. Thank you in advance for advice and pointers.

Good luck! Wish I could offer some advice, but I don't know much about rescue except that we don't qualify for most rescue organizations because we don't have a fenced in yard.

Anyway, welcome to the forum. Post some pics of your other pups and kitties...I'd love to see them.

Welcome to the forum, April.

Havanese Rescue is wonderful and many of us volunteer for them. As Janan already said, be sure to fill out an application if you would like to be considered for a future rescue that becomes available. Unfortunately, I think many people wait until a specific dog shows up and then applies, but you may be too late by then.
