Winston-itis strikes again...

Hey all! Yet another friend wanting a havanese...Winston obviously needs a percentage. LOL.

BUT she wants a smaller [hee hee] havanese...more on the 8-10 pound range. Not the mini or crazy teacup havanese. But you know a smaller side of normal.

I remember long ago reading about a REPUTABLE breeder that had on her website that she prefers to breed to the smaller side of the range. I can't for the life of me remember who what where. Obviously there are no guarantees but it doesn't hurt to stack the odds in your favor?

Anyone know? I do know it's NOT the wheatstate person.

I had ANOTHER friend get a Christmas Havanese...although from a pet store. I TRIED so hard. Gave her breeders that I knew had babies, etc....but of course she inquired Dec 23 and was not interested in my idea of a 'puppy basket' or something so they didn't rush...SIGH.

I've been reading just not posting. Thanks for all help

Oh and Winston is doing FABulous. Just recently 2 of the 3 kids commented on how Winston was the perfect dog. One of them even said they were glad we got Winston and not the puppy he wanted. LOL.

Hi Trish, I don't remember the name of the breeder...but I believe they were from Louisianna, and I think I remember Bugsy (Juilav) is from there if you want to pm her. I think we need some new pictures of Winston.

someone got a havanese where the breeder flew the little pup to them.
That was real nice. Do not remember who that was though perhaps it jogs someone's memory.

Not sure which breeder you are thinking of but I recall that Tim from T-Wags, Florida flew in with a puppy for a forum member.

I think Los Perritos is breeding towards the small side of standard. She also shows and does the required health testing. I have both small and large Havanese. Bella is 6 lbs and the boys are 16, but could lose a pound. I have to say, Bella is nice and light, but I prefer the larger size hav myself. She is so fragile I have to worry about her, birds of prey, stepping on her etc. Just stuff to think about. A 10-12 lb Havanese is perfect in my book. Not to light and not too heavy.

I would also caution anyone looking for smaller that it quickly becomes a slippery slope. I too wanted a havanese that wasn't too large because of my maltese. However, I know one breeder I personally looked at that had a few dogs produced with MVD. I wouldn't have known this if I didn't hear stories of pet owners not just the dogs in the breeding program.

Just wanted to bring this up too

I'm just talking about <12 pounds...the small side of average I suppose.

The louisiane breeder is southern silks and i think i remember she does not do health testing she also advertises teacup havanese which i think is a no-no.

seriously i love Winston BUT i would prefer it if he weighed 10-12 pounds.

don't want to start a debate just want to steer her in a reputable breeder direction.

thanks all!!

i'll look into los perritos and the ones pm'd to me.

so much fun looking for puppies even if it's not for me. LOL.

You'll be able to find plenty of good breeders that breed to the small side of standard and do all the testing and showing. I am seeing a lot of Havanese that are smaller in the ring. Four years ago the Hav's were much bigger, but I think some of the show breeders are now trying to breed smaller. I could be wrong, but they seem to be smaller these days. Good luck with your search!

Trish-
It seems like Jan has had the smaller dogs. You may want to contact JASHAVANESE on here. I am sure hers fit the standard, but I do not ever remember hearing of a big one from her. Maybe if you contact any of the breeders on here, they can help direct you. The most important thing is health and I think they could help. That is what I personally would do.
