Switching from Kibble to Raw

Hi everyone,

I recently had Lola tested for allergies and received the results today that she is allergic to several foods. I wasn't able to find a high quality kibble that doesn't have 1 or more of the ingredients she is allergic to in it, so I have decided to switch to Stella and Chewy's freeze dried raw. I was told that there would be no need to slowly transition from the kibble to raw, but I am hesitant because I don't want her to have any tummy upsets. For those of you who switched from kibble to raw, how did you go about doing so? Did you slowly wean your dog off or did you do the switch all together.

Thanks in advance!

Lauren & Lola

When Leo switched from kibble to Ziwipeak I tried to transition slowly but he just ate all the Ziwipeak out of the dish and left the kibble.

Ginger eats a mixture of both, actually 3, as she also has Ziwi mixed in, so I can't help you there. I was curious though, as to what Lola is allergic to.

Aw Leo, lol someone likes their food!! Lola really enjoyed it too-I ended up mixing it in with her kibble and she literally licked the bowl clean she loved it so much. So far so good!

She is considered very allergic to eggs, peas, and rice, and less allergic to potatoes, soy, dairy, oats, lamb, and salmon. Luckily she really enjoyed the raw!

They should have instructions on their website. You need to do it very slowly. My guys eat the Frozen S & C.

Both of mine are obvious Leo's. I tried to switch them slowly, but they wouldn't touch the kibble given the choice (and it was Orijen, so a 'good' kibble, as they go). There seemed to be no ill effects. I think the switching slowly thing makes sense if a dog has only ever eaten one thing in it's entire life, I can imagine in those circumstances a sudden change might be a surprise to the system, but dogs are scavengers and if they are often given different things I don't think the change has to be particularly slow. The worst that can happen is an upset tummy for a day or so, but that happens occasionally anyway. I'd try mixing in gradually rising proportions of the new food with the old but not worry too badly if, like Leo, Tycho and Cuba, Lola just ignores the kibble. Personally I was SO happy to find food that Tycho would eat at all - he just used to leave it all the time and I really worried about how much nutrition he was getting - that I went happily with whatever he wanted to do.
