dogs in the sun

Okay, I was looking at Emmies mom, Marina Girls adorable photo of her black Havanese, and thought how cute she lays in the sun, as does Cuddles. However, Cuddles is white. I have had people tell me that white does are sensitive to skin cancer? Has anyone heard that? Does anyone have experience? My dog always lays in the sunny part of the yard.

There's kind of a plus and minus going on. White dogs usually have less skin pigment (more prone to sun's harmful rays) but then the white fur is far more reflective than black fur (a positive). But I have no definitive answer.

My beloved Cosmo, a huge all white anatolian, LOVED to sun himself. everyday at 11am, he'd get up and walk himself out onto the deck and sun himself, every sunny day, till he got toasty hot, then come inside the house to cool off, then do it again.

He didn't get skin cancer. I only had him for 5 yrs (rescue).
