Watch your dog!!!

Sorry to have to post this scary news story, but it's something everyone, everywhere in the country has to pay attention to. Coyotes are everywhere, as are other predators that can take our pets out in an instant.

I hear ya!!! We have them in my neighborhood and every so often a poor dog will get snatched. I get sick just hearing about it. Whimsy is piddle pad trained and doesn't have to go out to potty. When we go out in the yard during the day to play she is always in my sight...never ever goes out alone....never!

I was sitting in the den Monday morning about 6:00 when I heard an awful racket and realized that what I was hearing was coyotes that sounded as if they were in the woods right behind the fenced backyard. Just another reason Leo is never out without me or DH.

That is very sad... When we are outside he is on a leash and under supervision i would be heartbroken if that happened to my dog

Tyler is never out alone either, just for that reason. One of us is always with him with an air horn in hand, just in case, as coyotes roam around here periodically during the day. We have seen them walking up the street and cutting through yards to get to the woods. It's very scary!

Kodi is always supervised outside too, but they are getting more and more brazen around here. After this happened, we talked this evening and are going to (finally, I've wanted it for a while!) have the back yard completely dog fenced. The property is already horse fenced, but that doesn't stop dogs OR coyotes.

The nice thing is that dave decided that if we're going to do that, we might as well do the deck and slider we've been talking about for years... And maybe the kitchen too. . I've got to get quotes. But the fence is getting done, no matter what.

Haven't seen Coyotes yet in our neck of the woods but there are hawks and owls I have seen overhead. One reason why Colbie never goes in the backyard without a person and on a leash, even if it a 30' one.

Karen, I have heard that coyotes can scale a 6-foot fence too, so be careful even with a fence. I am sure that it will be a deterrent to them though.

Oh, I know, but as you said, it is a deterrent. Fortunately, we have neighbors whose chickens are always loose, and when they AREN'T loose are only behind plastic mesh. SO I figure if they are after an easy meal, they'll tackle loose chickens before jumping (or climbing) a fence.

Kodi is good about staying close, but I want him to be able to enjoy his yard freely, just because he IS good and trustworthy. I'm not really worried about hawks…. when he was a tiny puppy, yes. But he's much too big for that to be an issue now. But we DO have coyotes in the woods right beside our house intermittently. They have a very large territory, and range far and wide. Fortunately, we have a good "early warning system" among the people in town with dogs. We let each other know on a regular basis where the coyote pack is.

The other good thing is Kodi is smart enough to be very wary of them. He won't go out, even on a 6 foot leash, with me, if we can hear the coyotes, and there have been a few times when I didn't see or hear anything, but he was obviously reluctant to go out. Since he'd MUCH prefer to go outdoors, I always take his word for it, and we use the indoor potty at these times.

Oh, and I wanted to add that Kodi would still never be unsupervised, even in a fenced yard. It would just give one more level of protection.
