Trying to nurse?

Hitchcock has only been here five days, but he's feeling right at home. Things are going really well and he really looks up to his older brother, following him around and imitating him. Kubrick is also becoming protective of his little brother, making sure he's okay when he's whining and sleeping next to his expen when it's nap time. One thing that Hitchcock is doing, that I don't think has been mentioned on the forum before, is that he's trying to nurse off of Kubrick! It cracks me up, though I'm trying to prevent it by pushing him away when he tries to do it. Kubrick lifts his leg (Hitch REALLY sticks his head down there) and looks at me like "Mom, what the heck is he DOING?"

It cracks me up... not only is Kubrick not his mom, he's a boy, LOL! I just wanted to see how many others with young puppies have seen this behavior with their older dogs. Hitchcock is 12 weeks old, so he'll probably grow out of it soon, I think.

Wow Lina, I haven't heard that one before though I suspect it's not all that unusual. Bailey, who was just under 9 weeks when I got him, never tried that. I'd be interested in other people's experience too.

Is he really trying to nurse (sucking/biting) or is he just smelling Kube's penis? Unfortunately, my girls will lift their legs for each other to get a good whiff (but they aren't trying to nurse off each other). It looks crazy to see it.

Kimberly, the first few days I really do think he was trying to nurse as I could see his mouth moving sometimes and when I checked Kubrick, he was wet because I think Hitch was mouthing his hairs (not on the penis, around it - haha, that sounds incredibly TMI), LOL. However, I think it's stopped now. I just saw him doing it again, and it does look like it's mostly just sniffing Kubrick as he's only under there a second and comes back out. I have seen the whole leg lifting to sniff thing before, this was just a tiny bit different. I think he's done with it now, as he doesn't seem to spend so much time down there as he used to.

Todd used to try to nurse our cat and our Lab when he was a baby. He came home at 9 weeks and quit trying to nurse around 11 wks.
It was so funny to watch the their expression when was trying to nurse...lol
Didn't someone post a "that's not a nipple" picture somewhere on the forum awhile ago?

Now I'm curious... I didn't see your first comments!

Though I DID tell Hitch he was being rather rude... maybe that's what stopped him from continuing the behavior, haha!

Ha! This is all quite interesting, and I must say I'm not surprised that a puppy might do this. It seems like my kittens would sometimes try it on my older cats.

(Yeah, I'm wondering what comments Kimberly revised, too! )

In my first comment, I was suggesting that maybe Kubrick was encouraging it. That's the gist of it.
