Oh no ticks again?

With the long awaited thaw, we know ticks will be ready to strike. I have used Frontline on Lucky in the past but the truth is that it kills ticks that get on him (and not right away) rather than keeping ticks away. I've been told that Advantix is much more effective at both keeping ticks away and killing them and I got some BUT have one big question:
Lucky weighs about 23 pounds (I know, he's a big boy)
the doses of Advantix are for
10-20
and 21-55 pounds
The pet store said for sure use the larger size dose but this is a pesticide and it's hard to believe my dog needs the same amount as a dog more than twice his size.
Should I use less than the whole tube?
Should I try the size for littler dogs and see if it works?
Has anyone had experience with it and does it cause skin irritation?
Thanks for any input you can provide.

I just used Advantix II on my 4 lb. puppy for the first time and she did not experience any skin irritation or other ill effects from it. As far as the dosing goes, I would refer to my vet for their advice on the proper amount. You could also contact the manufacturer if you wanted to.

I use Advantix II also and haven't had any problems, knock on wood. I used it on Mae for the first time last month with no issues. I found a tick on her before I applied and not one since. I'm lucky in that Tim weighs 15 pounds and Mae is about 7 so I don't have the range issue. I would either call my vet or see if there is someone at Advantix that might be able to help you. I don't think that there is a higher charge for larger dog doses so they shouldn't have any reason the direct you in that way for more money.

Does anything really keep ticks AWAY? i think they tend to crawl on your dog but die when they bite rather than attach? I have found dead ticks and live ones in A's fur but very few attached. I know there is some spray out there that you can spray on your dogs legs before you walk them but I've never used it. I am hoping the long cold winter we in New England have had will help with the ticks. They seem to get worse every year! UGG! Atticus is about to get his spring puppy cut for the upcoming Mud & Tick season, and my move to the Lake. He has a very wet and dirty life in the summer!!! He is the longest he has ever been. One of these days I'll try again to send a picture but it seems things have changed and my pics are not the right size anymore, it used to be so easy! ps I now use Vectra 3D, frontline doesn't seem to be working well in my area.

I had heard from the doctors at the lyme center here that in order for the winter to have a negative effect on the tick population it has to be both cold and DRY. This winter, at least in the Northeast was anything but dry. I think we can expect a higher then normal tick population this year

Yes I'd love to see Atticus, his markings are SO COOL!

My neighbors say Frontline doesn't do anything around here either. Since applying Advantix I haven't seen any ticks on either one of my pups and I do a thorough comb out and leaf removal on Mae everyday.

Thank you for your input all. I've been reading on line and hearing that breeders for example get the Advantix for the biggest dogs and split up the dosage on for example three smaller dogs and that works fine. So I think what I'll do is only give 23 pound Lucky half of the tube for 21-55 pound dogs and see how that works. I can recap and use it for two applications. Anyone have experience with using less than half the tube. Makes sense I think, it one tube will work for a 55 pound dog, half would be enough for a 22-3 pound dog.
Tried to reach Advantix for advice and it's not easy. thanks again

Actually, I DID get through to Advantix as you suggested and they were great. The vet on call pointed out that beyond the pesticidish ingredient, there is a something that makes the med spread across the dog's coat (hence the different dosage levels according to size of dog) and if I only gave half the med to to the dog, I might be not giving him the agents that make it spread (sounded clear when she explained) so I should not not give him all of it. Also, it doesn't keep in the tube so saving the other half for another dosage is a bad idea. And they tested to be sure tat 5 times the dose of each level was safe so....AND if the dog was going to have a topical reaction, he would with the smallest dose as easily with a larger one. Hope someone else is interested in this because it took me such a long time to explain. Thanks again for your input.
