How much play? how much lying around?

So other than Maddie who we all know is a play monster... how much time do your Adult Havs actually play? If you have more than much do they play with each other? or by themselves? and what constitutes play?

My boys play/wrestle and chase each other for about 10 minutes tops when they are first let out in the back yard... This happens about twice a day If we are home they are let out more often but they only play when they have been inside for a few hours. Jasper will sometimes chase a ball outside but loses interest quickly. And then they just sniff and bark at things. They very rarely play together inside, occassionally humping each other or fighting over a chew but that only lasts seconds... We can get Cash engaged in either tug of war or fetch for about 20 minutes inside a few times a week. And other than that and their walks (1-2 miles in the morning and sometimes a few smaller walks) they pretty much lie around all day and night... rising to defend the homestead from the mail and other such annoyances.

So how long do your Adults actually play for? do they play with each other? or respect each other's space?

Oh, this is a good question. I will be watching this thread!

Missy, my boys nap quite a bit. But, they also enjoy running from one end of the house to the other, several (a dozen?) times a day. This is because if they hear someone outside, walking by, they'll want to go outside (through the dog door, in the back of the house) to check it out, and then they'll want to race to the front window to check it out again from another angle. When one runs, the other will run too, so they don't miss out on any action.

My house is long, from front to back, which bothered me until I realized it is the perfect Hav indoor dog run.

They romp wildly (bitey face, clash of the titans, etc.) and do RLH about 2-3 times a day, usually in the morning and before dinner, and if I've been gone awhile during the day, again when I return.

Scout will also play by himself, getting toys from the toy hut and rubbing his topknot out and his body all over my furniture.

Sometimes they play a little more too - depends on their moods!

They usually play about 5 mins before we get out of bed in the morning. Then I let them out, the do what they have to and come back in for some rough playing, wrestling, and sometimes a tug of war. I go to work and my Mom tells me they sleep most of the day. I try to get home every day for lunch and we play inside take a walk if the weather is nice.

When I come home at 5pm, they will have another play session for about 20 mins, eat, then sleep. At about 8pm, they will get up and have another good session of wrestling, rlh, throwing toys around, etc. So, they are active but not all the time. And Shelby will sleep more than Kodi. If I am home, he will always instigate play with me.

Great topic!! I notice their level of activity relates to the weather. On a cloudy day, rainy day, they are lethargic and want to sleep A LOT. They do have 2 or 3 play periods a day where they play-fight, chase, RLH outside or thru the house. First thing in the AM esp. Then afternoon, and evening play times. They also LOVE to lay side by side and CHEW CHEW CHEW. But other times they are apart. Heath is more convivial. It is working out great. . .I LOVE my boyz and having 2 Havs.

and HEATH-Y, TOO !

2 or 3 times a day Bogie and Brando will play fight for about 15-20min each time. They chase each other throughout my home. Bando likes to chase my cat whenever he can.

Between playing and taking them out 3 times a day, plus one play session with me, they get their excercise. But other than that, they are the best rugs I ever had.

Chances are if your parents never had won't either...

Lola is a solo dog. She will play with me if I beg her to. Chase squeeky toys for a few minutes. On weekends we go to the park and play catch for 1+ hours. She gets a 2.5 hour walk every day. When I come home we have a mad RLH dancing licking festival for about 10 minutes. And outside of that, 15 minutes with her Kong feeding and about 20 minutes chomping a Moo Stick, she sleeps all the time. Moreso in the winter it seems. I bet Lola logs 18-20 hours. She is aware sleeping. She always knows where I am and follows me from room to room, but plops right down and sleeps in each room. In the evening she'll pop up if she hears the neighbors, bark twice, and then settles right back down.

At first as she got older and calmer I was concerned. But she's happy, healthy and doesn't get into trouble. She's just gotta get a little bigger to make a good rug! I love her so, lazy and precious as she is. She's just like me!

Dash is my play monster too. I would say him and Dora do about 2-3 15 min sessions per day usually on the couch. Then he usually has a 5-10 min hardcore play session with Belle. Belle and Dora don't play very often. Then they run the fence with the neighbors dogs doing RLH up and down the fence every time they go outside probably 5-6 times a day (Dasher's favorite activity!). But between, they crash out. I was surprised at how much they sleep when I first stayed home. They really play hard and crash hard. They do play a little less on days we do agility or long walks.

Thinking of adding a Neezer, check out this thread!

What a great idea for a thread! Since Marble is my first and only dog. I never know what's normal, so it's interesting to read about everyone's dogs. Marble has a few 10 minute play sessions a day (when one of us chases him around the house or plays fetch). He rarely does a RLH unless someone's chasing him or he has just had a bath.
He is pretty hyper outside and on walks. He spends most of the day lying near my feet, but he will follow me as soon as I move. About 7 times a day, he'll lay there and chew on his toys. He definitely chews on his toys more often when the kids come home and sleeps more when it's just me. Usually every morning and night he does his "trash check" to see if he can find anything interesting in the bathroom trash to pull out. When I'm in the kitchen, he lays down and watches, hoping for a crumb to drop or for me to give him a treat.

Keep these stories coming it is so good to hear. This thread does my heart good. I know all dogs are different...but I just had pictures of your dogs playing from morning to night...or at least for an hour at a time. So that my boys play with each other for 10/15 minutes twice a day is pretty normal--- along with their walks and like Jane sprints to check out the possible home invaders. I guess the big difference with my boys...mostly Jasper is he was never really a puppy...he has been this way since we brought him home at 9 weeks.... Just an old wise soul.

What an interesting thread--

Of course with just 1 hav I'm not sure I can really add to what you are asking, but my boys play at least 10 times a day. Everytime single time they come in from outside the chase is on! Quincy does a RLH and Vinnie is on the chase.

Quincy also plays with Vinnie a couple times a day. Every morning and every evening they play kinda "roll and jump the Vin dog". Basically kinda bitey and like leap frog.

Quincy has kept Vinnie very active and for that we are happy, because of his "bum" leg.
