Great vet visit today!
I am relieved to report that Archer's 3rd set of shots and vet visit went super today. After the first one which was horrible, (see the thread 'Adventures of Archer") I prepared him by training him up on tables, lifting gums, poking, looking in ears, etc. And I found a new vet. And she is WONDERFUL. She sat on the floor with him to do the basic exam since he seemed so relaxed there.
She made friends with him and he was never upset at all. She is conservative with the vaccines and recommended that I just finish the core vaccines and avoid the lepto (which I had been convinced to get 1 shot of at the other clinic) and some of the other kind of ineffective ones. He barely noticed the shot, as a tech came and cuddled him while I offered a tripe-filled Kong. I think he was wondering why everyone was praising him when he never noticed anything happen! A true world of difference from last time where he was struggling, growling, we had to restrain him, etc. It was BAD. And this was GOOD.
I am definitely going to go back to her. She is only there 1 day a week (works in a neighbouring city the rest of the week) but she said the other vets at that clinic are good too so I think I have found Archer's vet clinic! It is a bit more expensive but totally worth it. Now I know very clearly the difference between a good vet and a bad vet! Too bad I had to learn the way I did but I think I can say Archer is no worse for the wear and does not have any particular fear of the vet or the office. He was a bit concerned at first when he heard the other animals barking or making noises, but they put me in a room quickly and I just worked on some training with him on the floor which totally distracted him.
The clinic was really clean and spacious and everyone was friendly. I wish I had trusted my gut on the last place which was cramped and not as clean as I had expected as well. I think you can tell a lot by that kind of stuff now that I know more.
I am so relieved! I admit I was nervous going in this morning but feel so much better now.
Now all I have to do is decide about the Bordetella vaccine, and go back for Rabies when he is 6 mos.
Also I have to decide about flea control. She said in Vancouver heartworm is not really an issue at this point. So I might be fine to use a topical, or use nothing and treat if he does get something.
